Skyhawks drop home match to Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team played its second Tuesday match in as many weeks, ultimately falling to Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

With the loss, Fort Lewis dropped to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play while Adams State improved to 6-14, 3-6 RMAC.

The Grizzlies hit at a .241 clip and limited the Skyhawks to a .096 efficiency. Adams State held an advantage in digs (59-55) and blocks (6-5), but Fort Lewis was superior at the service line with five aces.

Sophomore Jordan DeJesus played just two sets but led the Skyhawks with 12 kills on 22 swings (.409). Senior Alexis Hobie followed with 10 kills, and junior Ella Butler totaled nine. Freshman Emery Pomroy led the way on defense with 14 digs, followed by fifth-year Lauren Shea who had nine. Senior Natalia Lambos totaled 37 assists to go along with seven digs and four kills.

In the opening set, an early run with Shea at the service line had Fort Lewis ahead 6-4. The Grizzlies came back with their own run to take a 12-11 lead and went on to enjoy another surge to extend the lead to four points. A kill by Shea ended the run, but Adams State used kills from three players to reach set point at 24-15. Fort Lewis extended the set with a kill and ace by Butler, but an eventual kill on the right side handed the Grizzlies set one.

The teams were deadlocked in the opening points of set two before a trio of Fort Lewis attacking errors made it a 12-8 difference. The Skyhawks saw a run of their own thanks to sophomore Alina Nunez at the serving line to pull within one at 14-13. The teams became tied four times late in the set, but a 3-0 run with a pair of aces made it a 21-18 Adams State lead. An attacking error gave the Grizzlies set point, but Butler put away back-to-back kills to make it 24-23. Despite the late pressure, a block on the pin ended the set at 25-23.

Fort Lewis had renewed energy out of the break and earned a 7-2 lead to begin the third set. The Grizzlies countered and tied the score, but a kill by Hobie brought the lead back to the Skyhawks. The lead stayed with Fort Lewis until a four-point run allowed Adams State to tie it up at 16-all. Fort Lewis held onto the lead late in the set after kills by Butler and DeJesus made it 23-21. The score became tied again, this time at 23-23, but an attacking error and key block by fifth-year JJ Curry gave Fort Lewis the third set.

The Grizzlies wasted no time building a lead in the fourth and used a pair of scoring runs to see a 13-5 lead. Lambos ended the run with a setter dump, but a quick side out kill on the outside led to another run for a 20-6 score. Fort Lewis added three points thanks to an ace by freshman Maddy Shumway and kill from, followed by a pair of two-point runs for a 24-14 score. Adams State had the final say and tooled the block for a kill to end the set at 25-14.
