Volleyball to host three home matches during Homecoming

DURANGO, Colo. – Homecoming week is upon us, and the Fort Lewis College volleyball team is taking advantage of the festivities with three home matches, beginning on Tuesday with the annual Nike N7 celebration.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks were at home last Tuesday where they lost to Western Colorado University. Then, they traveling the New Mexico Highlands and earned a decisive sweep over the Cowgirls on Friday. In the loss to the Mountaineers, Fort Lewis was held to a .160 efficiency while Western Colorado enjoyed a .254 clip. The Skyhawks out-dug the Mountaineers, 64-54, and held a 10-9 edge in aces. Western Colorado tallied 11 blocks compared to nine for Fort Lewis.

Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 14 kills and 16 digs, followed by senior Alexis Hobie who had 11 kills. Junior Ella Butler put away nine kills on 20 swings (.400) to lead the team from an efficiency standpoint. Senior Natalia Lambos recorded her third straight double-double with 40 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Emery Pomroy earned 11 digs and seven assists.

In Friday's win, Fort Lewis hit .149 and limited NMHU to a .092 efficiency. The Skyhawks held an advantage in all statistical categories with the exception of blocks where the Cowgirls held a 6-4 advantage. Nunez led the team and tied for the match lead with 13 kills, followed by senior Alexis Hobie who chipped in 10. Lambos coordinated the offense and totaled 27 assists to go along with six digs and three blocks. Pomroy led all players with 12 digs.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies are 5-14 overall and 2-6 in conference play following a three-set win over Chadron State on Saturday. Adams State is 4-4 at home and 0-4 on the road. As a team, the Grizzlies hit .164 compared to a .173 efficiency for their opponents. They average 16 digs and 1.7 blocks per set.

Cindy Garcia leads the team with 3.73 kills per set, followed by Anna Huggins at 3.20 per set. Katie Bauer is the most efficient offensive player with a .310 hitting percentage in 239 chances. The statistics make it appear as though the Grizzlies have used four setters throughout the season, led by Remi Vargas at 4.85 assists per set. On defense, Keely-Shae Sapiga leads the way at 3.04 digs per set, followed by three players with at least two digs per set.

Fort Lewis and Adams State squared off in a regional pod match in early October, and the Skyhawks came away with a 3-2 win. Fort Lewis saw double-digit kills from four players and double-digit digs from five. The Grizzlies were aided by 17 total blocks.

Scouting Regis University
After a slow start to the season, Regis sits at 10-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play. They enjoyed an eight-match winning streak that was snapped on Saturday in a four-setter versus No. 17 Colorado Mesa. The Rangers are hitting .235 this season compared to a .175 clip from their opponents. They lead the league with 2.90 blocks per set.

Individually, Halle Theis leads the team with 3.48 kills per set, followed by four players who put away two or more per set. Braiziah Dixon leads the conference with a .426 hitting efficiency and ranks fourth in blocks per set at 1.24. Amelia Davis is the conference leader in blocks per set at 1.34. Reagan Hickey, a true freshman setter, has taken over the offensive coordination and averaged 10.79 assists per set. Bre Skala has been nails defensively and leads the team with 4.61 digs per set.

Fort Lewis is 4-24 all-time against Regis and has lost 16 straight to the Rangers. The Skyhawks were swept last season on the road.

Scouting UCCS
The Mountain Lions are 9-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The team is 6-1 at home and 2-6 in road matches. Last week, UCCS fell to No. 17 Colorado Mesa (3-1) before earning a sweep over Westminster. UCCS is hitting .194 on the year compared to a .202 clip for their opponents. They average 15.7 digs and 1.8 blocks per set.

Payton Tompkins leads the team with 3.27 kills per set, followed by Emily Pruitt at 3.25 per set. The duo of Audrey Dowd and Maylen Mitrovich have handled setting duties, averaging 7.42 and 5.13 assists per set, respectively. On defense, Mackenzie Ransom is pacing the group at 3.95 digs per set. Defense at the net is highlighted by Avery Ahlers who has 54 total blocks. The Mountain Lions boast a youthful roster with zero seniors and nine freshmen.

Fort Lewis is 17-24 all-time against UCCS with an 8-11 record in Whalen Gym. Last season, the Skyhawks fell in five at home before earning a four-set win on the road in the regional pod match.
