Tyson captures medalist honors following three-way playoff, Skyhawks take sixth at The Hrnciar

10/22/2024 5:12:00 PM

DUNCAN, Okla. – Fort Lewis' Tyler Tyson climbed four spots in the final round and capped his career-best performance by winning a three-way playoff to secure his first-career individual championship down at The Hrnciar on a one-over-par finish to lift his Skyhawks into sixth place as a team at The Territory Golf Club.

"To be honest, I was shocked I got into the playoff after being three strokes back with two holes left," Tyson said. "But that playoff, being in contention, that was an awesome feeling, especially with two big putts down the stretch."

Tyson, who found himself in fifth following the first two rounds of action and three strokes back with two holes left to play, managed to cut through the deficit to ultimately tie Cameron's Ethan Parker and St. Mary's Baptiste Touchard for first place.

Tyson then went on to out-shoot the duo through a two-hole playoff to claim individual medalist honors. In sudden death, Tyson and Parker managed a par over Touchard to advance to the final hole before Tyson beat Parker bogey against double-bogey. Additionally, Tyson joins Traejan Andrews as the two Skyhawks men to win individual honors this season; the duo is the first to record individual medalist wins since 2011.

On the team scoreboard side, host institution Cameron walked away with medalist honors as the Aggies posted scores of 293 (+5), 295 (+7), and 295 (+7) to win the tournament by two strokes on an 883 (+19) total. No. 19-ranked Dallas Baptist finished in second place with an 885 (+21). Fort Lewis jumped four spots through the final round to capture sixth place as a squad with a 906 (+42) and edge No. 21-ranked Midwestern State, who fell behind the Skyhawks with a 907 (+43).

Jordan Jennings made the single-biggest improvement by an individual in the third round as the redshirt junior jumped 31 spots on the leaderboard thanks to a two-under-par 70 to secure a tie for 14th on a 225 (+9) total.

Ronald Kildall III posted a 79 (+7), identical to his second round, to ultimately earn a tie for 40th after carding a 232 (+16). Carson Kerr fell to 55th with a 238 (+22) total to round out the Skyhawks four-man scoring contributors, with Jackson Rottschafer one stroke back in a tie for 56th on a 239 (+23).
