Legendre’s first-career hat trick secures RMAC Tournament berth for No. 19 Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. – Making the start to his final three regular-season matches at home on Dirks Field, fifth-year senior Gabriel Legendre stepped into the moment and delivered his first-career hat trick in his 79th career match to power the no. 19-ranked Skyhawks (9-2-5, 5-2-1 RMAC) to a 3-0 shutout over Westminster (4-7-5, 0-5-3 RMAC) and punch a ticket into the 2024 RMAC Tournament.

"What a special moment and a special night for Gabe to get those three goals," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "As a group, we know we didn't play our best or to our potential last weekend. We wanted to respond, and coming out and getting the win and three points is great, but to be able to do it in the convincing manner we did with such a strong overall team performance, was great for the group morale."

Fort Lewis dominated Westminster, taking control of possession for 54 percent of the match while firing 14 shots and seven corner kicks. While Westminster took an equal 14 shots, the Skyhawks placed nine shots on goal against WU's six. Sophomore Lucas Martin returned to goal-tending duties for the Skyhawks after a four-match hiatus and tied his career-high with six saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. Roark Looney made an identical six saves between the posts for Westminster.

Legendre first broke through the Griffins' defense in the 20th minute as a quick turnover at midfield and a subsequent pass to Tomas Duenes allowed Duenes to punch a through-ball down the left side towards the box. While the keeper rushed out and a defender closed in, Legendre found a glimpse of space to send a lunging shot into the back-right corner of the net.

13 minutes later, Duenes fired off a corner from the near side to the far corner of the box, where Casey Stracher drove a header back to where it came toward the near post where a streaking Legendre made a header inside the right post for a 2-0 cushion.

Westminster found the back of the net with 1:43 seconds remaining in the first half on a volley that was left un-cleared near the top of the box, however, a foul in the box by the Griffins just before the shot nullified the score.

It took 15 minutes into the second half for Legendre to catapult himself up through the Fort Lewis record books. Legendre and Thomas Kirkham had a classic give-and-go just in front of the Skyhawks bench before Legendre drove untouched to the edge of the penalty box and rifled a ball down the turf and inside the left post to complete the hat trick.

With the goal, Legendre brings his career total to 33 and ties Rich Hansen (1995-98) for the fifth-most goals in program history. In addition, his nine points bring his career total to 82, jumping Thomas Hoang (2008-11) and Euan Percell (2007-09) for the seventh-most points in Skyhawks history. Legendre trails Percell in total goals (37) and Yannis Becker (2012-15) in total points (86).
