Andrews stays hot as Skyhawks chase top five finish following day one of Ryan Palmer Foundation Invite

AMARILLO, Texas – After earning his first career medalist honor last week, junior Traejan Andrews kept the heat in his irons, carding rounds of 63 (-7) and 70 (E) to sit in a tie for third overall and chase the tournament leader by four strokes to lead the Fort Lewis men's golf team into a tie for fourth through the opening rounds down at the Amarillo Country Club.
 
The Skyhawks own a five-under-par team total of 555 with a pair of 276 (-4) and 279 (-1) single-round scores. FLC is tied with No. 20-ranked West Texas A&M's b-team and trails both Colorado Mesa in third (553, -7) and Colorado School of Mines in second (551, -9), who are each receiving votes on the Bushnell/GolfWeek DII Coaches Poll, and No. 4-ranked Oklahoma Christian who leads all squads with a commanding 12-stroke lead on a 539 (-21) total.
 
Trailing Fort Lewis is No. 20-ranked West Texas A&M's a-team and No. 23-ranked Midwestern State who each stand tied for sixth with a pair of 557s (-3). St. Mary's follows closely behind in eighth with a 558. (-2).
 
St. Mary's own Kongpop Kaikaew stands in sole possession of first place after the junior from Rayong, Thailand, opened the tournament with a 67 (-3) followed by an impressive 62 (-8) to lead the field by three strokes at 129 (-11).  
 
Jackson Rottschafer, who made his season debut last week, currently stands as the only additional Skyhawk in the top 25 as the senior resides in 22nd thanks to scores of 72 (+2) and 67 (-3) for a total of 139 (-1). Jordan Jennings is the next man up in 32nd on a 141 (+1) followed by Jake Chesler in 59th (145, +5) and Tyler Tyson in 68th (146, +6).
 
Prime Positioning
Fort Lewis will make one final trip around The Amarillo Country Club tomorrow morning in hopes of besting last week's third-place finish. The third round will tee off starting at 6 a.m.
