No. 19 Fort Lewis posts 2-0 shutout on senior day to complete season sweep of Colorado Mesa

Skyhawks down Mavericks twice in a year for first time since 2011

DURANGO, Colo. – No. 19-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer (10-2-5, 6-2-1 RMAC) used a complete and balanced offensive performance on Sunday afternoon a midst bursts of sleet and rain to complete the season-sweep over Colorado Mesa (5-9-2, 2-6-1 RMAC) with a 2-0 shutout and earn the Skyhawks tenth win of the year.

"Fantastic way to celebrate and acknowledge our seniors for all their years and dedication to the program. They've all had significant impacts on the team and program, and I couldn't be prouder," head coach David Oberholtzer commented. "In terms of the game, it was another well-rounded performance despite the slippery conditions with a mix of snow and rain. The guys played really well in possession, created some great chances, and were really stingy defensively. That's the second consecutive shutout for six big points on the weekend, so I'm just really happy and proud of the guys."

Colorado Mesa controlled possession for nearly 53 minutes of the match, but Fort Lewis still held the invaders from the Western Slope to just nine shots across the day, placing just two on goal, while fending off a pair of corner kicks. Sophomore Lucas Martin earned the pair of saves en route to his seventh shutout of the season and the tenth of his career.

On the flip side, the Skyhawks consistent attack launched 16 total shots, eight of which were between the posts with six being saved by CMU's Diego Chavez, and four corner kicks with a pair in each half. FLC led in fouls 11-9.

After recording his first career hat trick on Friday night, fifth-year senior Gabriel Legendre provided an encore giving Fort Lewis a 1-0 advantage just ten minutes into the match. Fabrizio Aguilera drove from midfield into the right side of the penalty box for taking a shot that deflected off the right post past the diving goalkeeper, leaving Legendre in perfect position to volley the ball back into the empty net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Aguilera picked up his first career assist.

Similar to the first half, it took the Skyhawks only 11 minutes out of the locker room to notch the second goal of the match. Casey Stracher forced a turnover near the Mavericks bench half-way into his own defensive half, and proceeded to out-race two defenders down the sideline nearly 75 yards for a one-on-one battle with the keeper. Stracher made a soft chip, roughly six yards out, and found the back of the net with ease for his second goal of the year and the eighth pf his career.

Aguilera fired off a game-high four shots followed by Vincent Edgell who matched Matheus Lazzuri for the Mavericks with three. Tristen Banquil, Jacob Ramos, and David Citron each took two shots.
