Martin’s save sends No. 17 Skyhawks to RMAC Tournament Semifinals

Fort Lewis battles to a 2-2 draw with MSU Denver

DURANGO, Colo. – Simply put, it all came down to one penalty kick, and Lucas Martin stepped up and delivered the save that sent no. 17-ranked Fort Lewis into the RMAC Tournament Semifinals.

"That's tournament time soccer," David Oberholtzer shared. "Metro did a good job; I would have liked to see us put a few more chances away. It was an exciting game, back and forth all night, really proud of the guys for how they fought back tooth and nail to find an equalizer late in the game, how they pushed through overtime and just nerves of steel in penalties. Everyone who stepped up put it away, and Lucas sealed it. I'm happy for the guys and just excited to keep moving on."

The Skyhawks, who led first, found themselves tied and then trailing in the second half before ultimately forcing a 2-2 draw after full-time. FLC out-shot MSUD 5-to-1 in the first overtime, while MSUD took the offensive, taking three shots to FLC's one in the second overtime. Ultimately, after 11 consecutive penalty goals scored, Martin dove to his left in his sixth attempt, making the save that would lift Fort Lewis to 11-2-6 on the season and into the next round of the conference tournament. MSU Denver ends its season with a 7-8-4 overall record.

The Skyhawks led 1-0 from the tenth minute of action as Jacob Ramos punched in a shot that was fired off by Thomas Kirkham but deflected off the goalkeepers' gloves. In the second half, set pieces began to sink Fort Lewis as the Roadrunners notched a pair of tap-in goals by Jackson Vander Ven and Parker Landry on two heading passes from Phillie Villapudua.

Trailing 2-1 with only 14 minutes remaining in the match, the Skyhawks took the offensive, firing off 13 shots across the half and 25 for the match while placing 11 on goal. MSU Denver took just 11 shots on the night placing six between the posts.

The equalizer came in the 83rd minute when David Citron took service at midfield before driving into the Roadrunners defensive half and sending a through-ball ahead to Fabrizio Aguilera. Aguilera split a pair of defenders and rifled a shot off his right foot that deflected off the goalkeepers' gloves and in for his fifth goal of the season.

MSU Denver led Fort Lewis in corner kicks 9-to-8 and committed 18 fouls against the Skyhawks 13. Tomas Duenes led all players with six total shots and two on-goal, while Citron supplied another five shots with three on-goal.
