No. 17 Skyhawks punch ticket back to RMAC Tournament Championship with 3-0 rout of Rangers

Hjalmarsson scores twice in 13 minutes

DENVER, Colo. – Anton Hjalmarsson made a triumphant return on Wednesday night as he scored two goals over the span of 13 minutes on the pitch to lead no. 17-ranked and third-seeded Fort Lewis (12-2-6) to a 3-0 victory over Regis (7-3-9) to advance back to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match for the second-straight season.

The Skyhawks will take on top-seeded and no. 15-ranked CSU Pueblo (13-3-3) in the title match for the second time in as many seasons following the ThunderWolves 2-1 victory over UCCS (14-2-4) earlier tonight. The two squads met last year in Durango, Colo., when The Pack took home a 2-0 victory on Fort Lewis' home pitch. Tickets are on sale now through the RMAC ticketing site. Fans can watch the match live pay-per-view on the RMAC Network. The match time is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

"That was a big-time performance from our guys," head coach David Oberholtzer shared post-game. "We lost to Regis earlier in the year, and we know now that if we had just tied that match, we'd have won the regular season. There were a lot of reasons tonight that added motivation, and the guys came out dialed the whole match, didn't get up any clear chances, and overall, I'm really proud of and happy for them."

Regis and Fort Lewis got through just 13:22 seconds of action before an accident nearby caused a power outage suspending the match for over an hour. Thankfully, the Skyhawks carried a 1-0 advantage into the intermission on a goal from Hjalmarsson in the 12th minute. David Citron had sent service into the penalty box to a streaking Luke Pope, who, in turn, sent a crossing pass just feet from the end line that found Hjalmarsson between a pair of Rangers for a tap-in score.

"We had been in a similar position previously with a lightning delay at CSU Pueblo. Knowing that that can be an easy moment to switch off, we got together as a team and really used that opportunity to make sure we were locked in mentally, and the guys came back out without missing a step."

Out of the intermission, and despite controlling possession for only 37 minutes of the match, Fort Lewis was right back on the offensive, firing off 10 of its 16 total shots through the first half. FLC finished the night with eight shots on goal against RU's four, with six placed between the posts. All four shots on goal for Regis came in the second half.

Fort Lewis tacked on another score off the boot from Hjalmarsson in the 25th minute when the sophomore and 2023 All-American took service near midfield and drove to just outside of the box before launching a left-footed rocket just inside the right post to complete the fourth two-goal performance his career.

Opportunity came knocking once more just two minutes later when Quinn Bosanko fired off a free kick from 15 yards into his own half to a sprinting Gabriel Legendre near the Rangers' penalty box. Luck favored FLC as the defender made a header attempt that darted back towards his own goal, giving Legendre a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, resulting in a soft chip followed by a header for safe measures to record the third goal of the match and Legendre's ninth of the season. Regis pressured Fort Lewis into its defensive half for over 30 minutes of the match but never found an opening.

The Skyhawks committed just four fouls to the Rangers' eight and even trailed in corner kicks 11-to-3. Lucas Martin made four quality saves in goal en route to his south-central-region-leading ninth clean sheet of the season. Greg Squire made five saves for RU.
