Volleyball heads to Pueblo for standalone conference match

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball plays just one match this week, a Friday conference meeting with CSU Pueblo inside of Massari Arena with postseason implications on the line.

Fort Lewis ranks ninth in the conference with three regular season matches remaining. The top-eight teams earn a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. Most of the teams ranking ahead of Fort Lewis have four games left to play, so the Skyhawks have a one-game advantage at this time. Westminster ranks in the eight spot with a record of 5-5 heading into the weekend.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is coming off its Power Pod weekend which saw the team drop matches to Adams State (3-0) and UCCS (3-1). In the Adams State match, the Skyhawks were limited to hitting just .105 versus a .233 efficiency for the Grizzlies. The teams were even with 11 blocks apiece while Adams State held a 56-48 edge in digs.

Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 13 kills and 16 digs, followed by fifth-year Lauren Shea who put away 12 kills. Redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie led the way with six blocks while Shea had five. Freshman Emery Pomroy recorded 11 digs, and senior Natalia Lambos dished out 32 assists.

Against UCCS, the highlight of the match for Fort Lewis came at the net where they outblocked the Mountain Lions 17-6. Despite the net defense, UCCS outhit Fort Lewis .122/.071. UCCS came away with 86 digs and seven aces compared to 73 digs and two aces for Fort Lewis.

Fifth-year Lauren Shea led the team with 12 kills and 10 digs, followed by sophomore Alina Nunez who had 10 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Emery Pomroy tied for the team lead with 15 digs, matching senior Natalia Lambos who also added 36 assists. Junior Ella Butler led the way with seven blocks, followed by redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie who had six.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack is 13-9 on the year and 6-4 in conference play. The team owns a 10-1 record when playing at home. CSU Pueblo earned a 3-0 win over Chadron State in the Power Pod last week before falling in three to South Dakota Mines. The Pack hits for a .227 efficiency compared to a .206 mark for their opponents. They average 15.1 digs, 1.7 blocks, and 1.7 aces per set.

Leading the way individually is Sadie Scoville who averages 3.43 kills per set. She is backed by Rayliene Joens and Kaitlyn Hall who each put away over two kills per set. CSU Pueblo has worked three setters throughout the season with Hallie Hewlett being the most consistent in terms of sets played. She is averaging 5.14 assists per set. On defense, Scoville is also pacing the team with 2.79 digs per set, followed by three players with over two digs per set. Macy Wood leads the team with 44 total blocks for a .88 blocks per set average.

Fort Lewis trails the all-time series at 22-26 with a 9-14 mark on the road. The Skyhawks had the upper hand last season in a gutsy five-set decision in Whalen Gym. The fifth set ended in a 19-17 score and featured a match-extending overturned challenge by coach Tarnauskaite.

Fort Lewis will return home for the final two matches of the regular-season next week. Friday will feature a 6:00 p.m. first serve against Colorado School of Mines, followed by a 2:00 p.m. match against No. 4 MSU Denver on Saturday.
