Cold bats sink Skyhawks against No. 11 Cougars

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball, unable to keep pace with the offensive prowess of No. 11-ranked Colorado Christian, dropped both of its Sunday games 9-3 and 8-0 to surrender the series to the top-ranked Cougars up on Aspen Field.

The Skyhawks fall to 2-15 overall on the year and 0-8 in conference play through the first two weeks. The Cougars rise to 16-1 and 8-0 through RMAC games.

Senior Kayla Stone was the only member of FLC to record three hits on the day, picking up a double, a run scored, and driving in two runs in the process. Cara Daugherty stood as the only additional Skyhawk to have a multi-hit afternoon with a single in each contest.

Colorado Christian's Kayla Middleton and Sami Edwards were the only pair to tally three hits on the afternoon. Edwards reached thrice in game one by way of three singles and stole a bag as well. Kayla Middleton on the other hand, supplied a double and single in game one before recording a two-run homer that just stayed inside of the foul pole down the left-field line in game two.

Game One – Colorado Christian 9, Fort Lewis 3
For the first and only time in the series, Fort Lewis forced Colorado Christian to turn to its bullpen after stringing together an effective offensive push late in the game. Emma Duncan, who earned the win to improve to 9-0, threw 4.2 innings in game one and surrendered three runs, only two of which were earned, whilst scattering six hits and three walks.

Fort Lewis saw just a single base runner through the first three frames before the Skyhawks finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kayla Stone came around on a single from Daugherty after an error by the left fielder and a wild pitch the play prior.

Stone went on to be the spark in the fifth inning, notching a two-out, two-RBI bases-loaded single right back through the middle. CCU however, would turn to Hanna Espinoza (1-0) who through 2.1 innings of no-hit relief with one strikeout. Hailie Mann (0-8) was credited the loss after throwing her fifth complete game of the season and giving up nine runs, only seven of which were earned, on 13 hits and no walks.

Game Two – Colorado Christian 8, Fort Lewis 0 (5 Innings)
Colorado Christian picked up right where they left off in game one as Kayla Middleton, following a lead-off walk, punched a two-run shot down the left field line that cleared the fence for the early advantage.

As the Cougars began to roll offensively, tacking on three more runs in the second inning, one in the third, and two in the fourth, the Skyhawks simply couldn't find any rhythm at the plate. Just four runners reached base for FLC through the first four innings, only two of which came on hits credited to Daugherty and Stone. In the bottom of the fifth, Alejandra Medina earned a pinch-hit double that hopped over the fence in left field, but a pair of fly balls and a hard-hit grounder kept the Skyhawks off the scoreboard.

Kaila Eastburn (6-0) went the distance for the second time against Fort Lewis, scattering the Skyhawks' three hits into three separate frames while also striking out without surrendering a walk. In addition to her lone hit batter, Eastburn cruised through the afternoon on 79 total pitches.
