Skyhawks split series-opening doubleheader with Grizzlies

Fort Lewis still in line to capture series tomorrow afternoon

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Amiee Shanks (3-7) guided the Fort Lewis softball team to a 6-2 victory over Adams State in game one of the afternoon, but the hot-handed Grizzlies answered loudly with a 10-6 victory in game two to even the series at one apiece heading into tomorrow's doubleheader action on the ASU Softball Field.

The Skyhawks and Grizzlies now boast identical 3-16 overall records and 1-9 records through Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Shanks made two appearances on the afternoon, a complete-game start in game one, her 10th of the season, and a 1.2-inning relief appearance in game two. On the offensive side, Alex Tenorio notched a 4-8 day including three runs and a single run batted in (RBI) while Hannah Rutherford added a 4-7 outing of her own while scoring two runs and posting two RBIs. In addition, Kayla Stone finished the day 3-8 with two runs scored and 4 RBIs.

Game One – Fort Lewis 6, Adams State 2
Shanks toed the rubber against Aubree Davis (2-7) and pitched her squad to a commanding victory to open the series. Shanks held the Grizzlies hitless in six of her seven innings surrendering only two hits in total and two runs on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Skyhawks, who reached base twice in the second inning on an error and fielder's choice, caught fire with two outs in the third inning to plate four runs on five hits including a two-run triple down the right-field line from Stone and back-to-back RBI singles from Cara Daugherty and Catheryn Rodman.

Rutherford then became the Skyhawks' insurer down the stretch as the Roanoke, Texas, native pushed across a lone run in the fourth and sixth innings on a double to center field and a triple to right-center, respectively.

Game Two – Adams State 10, Fort Lewis 6
Once more it was the third frame of the contest that saw Fort Lewis find its offensive spark. The Skyhawks, on the back of a lead-off triple from Tenorio and another set of consecutive run-scoring singles from Stone and Daugherty, pushed across the first two runs of the ball game.

Adams State, however, answered with a pair of thunderous frames in the fourth and fifth innings, racking up 10 combined runs on 10 hits and an error kickstarted by a three-run home run off the back of Belinda Vargas, her third of the season.

Fort Lewis rallied in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on a base hit from Tenorio to center field and adding another on an RBI walk from Ashley Burriel two at-bats later. The Skyhawks then threatened with the bases load and one out, but a line drive rifled directly into the glove of the first baseman who touched her base to secure the inning-ending double-play. ASU's Danielle Hood (1-7) went on to pick up her first win of the season.
