Shanks goes the distance as Skyhawks down No. 4 Buffs for first time in program history

Fort Lewis downs ranked opponent for first time since 2013

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – Spear-headed by a masterful complete game in the circle from Amiee Shanks aided by a three-run bases-clearing triple from Natalie Rodman, the Fort Lewis softball team bested the fourth-ranked West Texas A&M Buffaloes for the first time in program history by a 5-2 decision to close out the South Central Softball Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Los Lunas Sports Complex.

Fort Lewis finally downs the Buffs to move to 2-3 overall and snap a 13-game win streak for WTAMU dating back to Feb. 9, 2013, when the two programs met for the first time in Las Vegas, Nev. The Buffs fall to 4-1 overall and suffer their first non-conference loss in two years.

The Skyhawks offense exploded in the bottom of the third inning for five runs – the most allowed by West Texas A&M in a single inning thus far – on four singles strung together by Ashley Burriel, Alex Tenorio, Kayla Stone, and Catheryn Rodman. Leading 1-0, Natalie Rodman broke the inning open with a bases-clearing triple that danced inside the right field line. Cara Daugherty forced a fielder's choice the following at-bat to drive in Rodman.

West Texas A&M saw just a single hit in the opening frame before Shanks registered a strikeout and forced a ground-out to end the inning. Staying hot in the second, Shanks sat the Buffs down in order to move into the third inning.

The Lady Buffs threatened in the third and fourth innings thanks to lead-off hits but ultimately came up empty in the run department. Finally, in the top of the fifth, WTAMU broke the shutout as they pushed across a single run on base-hit to center field. In the final frame, West Texas A&M reached base a handful of times but could only score one final run before a ground ball to second base that kicked off the glove of Stone took a favorable hop toward second base into the glove of Tenorio who stepped on the bag to end the game.

Shanks (2-1) surrendered both earned runs while scattering eight total hits and fanning three against only two walks. With 32 batters faced, Shanks forced 12 into groundouts and six into pop flies. WTAMU's Emily Boyer (2-1), a 2023 Honorable Mention All-American and national freshman of the year finalist, took just her fourth career loss (20-4) after giving up five earned runs on eight hits to the Skyhawks. Boyer also struck out only three Skyhawks.

Cat Rodman drove in a run while also scoring herself as she posted a two-hit outing to match Boyer. Tenorio, on the other hand, matched Lauren Granger with a perfect 3-3 at the plate on the afternoon.

Quotable
"Super proud of Amiee, she has no fear as a pitcher, she doesn't care who's in the box, and she's going to go right at them. I'm proud of our entire lineup today. We have a small team, but everyone knew their role, they stayed level through some of [West Texas'] big moments and played textbook softball. The energy was extremely high all day and it was just a fun softball game to be a part of." - Head coach Paige Adair
