Skyhawks fall twice on Friday afternoon

Fort Lewis falls out of contention for a spot in the RMAC Tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Unable to convert on timely opportunities at the plate, the Fort Lewis softball team dropped both games on the road at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs by scores of 4-2 in game one and 5-4 in game two over at a capricious Mountain Lion Field.

The Skyhawks fell to 17-30 overall and 15-23 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games while the Mountain Lions rose to 19-32 and 16-26 in conference play.

Hannah Rutherford led all Skyhawks on the day with a three-hit performance in game one while Alex Tenorio and Ashley Burriel were the only other pair to record multi-hit afternoons. As for UCCS, Jacqueline Berkowitz led the home team with three hits on the day with Jennavieve Goldsworth and Jacquelynn Siefken adding multi-hit outings as well.

Game One – UCCS 4, Fort Lewis 2
Offense was the tale of the tape in the series opener as both squads combined for 13 total hits with the Mountain Lions taking a 7-6 edge while also committing the only error of the game.

The Mountain Lions struck first on a two-out double-steal in the bottom of the first inning as Izzy Giroux's momentum sliding into second base was just enough to knock the ball out of the glove and into the turf allowing Gianna Pancost to score. Fort Lewis quickly tied the game in the top of the second on a solo home run to left from Cali Niccum, the first of her collegiate career, before then taking a 2-1 lead on Rutherford's third home run of the season in the top of the third frame.

It wasn't until the fifth inning that UCCS found life once again at the plate. After a two-out single put a pair of runners on first and second, Pancost stepped up and belted a bases-clearing double to left-centerfield to recapture the lead. Giroux would single the following at-bat to drive in the fourth and final run of the ball game for the home squad.

UCCS' Autumn Kunze (11-10) earned the win after going the distance and giving up the two solo home runs for the only two earned runs alongside six hits, two walks, a hit batter, and four strikeouts. Amiee Shanks (9-15) took the loss on her 24th complete game of the season with four earned runs, seven hits, three walks, and six strikeouts: her second-most in a game this season.

Game Two – UCCS 5, Fort Lewis 4
Trailing from the get-go once again, the Skyhawks nearly pulled it back in the sixth inning before the Mountain Lions' home-field advantage came into play. In addition, both squads combined for 13 hits once again with UCCS doubling down on its 7-6 edge.

UCCS leaped out to an early lead after racking up four runs in its first trip to the plate thanks to a combined four hits and one, two-run error, the only of the game, featuring a two-run single off the bat of Laynee Case.

Natalie Rodman singled to score the first run of the game for the Blue and Gold in the second inning, but it wouldn't be until the top of the sixth that Fort Lewis would score again. After a lead-off walk from Burriel, Kayla Stone belted her team-leading ninth home run of the year to pull within one. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed Catheryn Rodman, who reached by way of a walk, to tie the game at four a piece.

In the bottom of the sixth, UCCS plated the go-ahead run of the game on a one-out suicide squeeze play that saw Maddie Unrein lay down a bunt for a single.

Kailey Bond (7-11) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions after a 6.0 inning performance that saw Bond allow three earned runs on six hits with five walks, a wild pitch, and one strikeout. Caydee Farnworth (1-8) closed out the game with one strikeout and no hits to pick up her first save of the season.
