4/6/2024 7:16:00 PM

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Fort Lewis College men's golf team opened its back-to-back tournament weekend in the desert with an 8th-place finish at the Hot Dirt Classic Saturday afternoon at the Golf Club of Estrella.

Hosted by Colorado School of Mines, the Skyhawks battled through a challenging field of 20 opponents to its highest finish of the spring season.

No. 9-ranked Colorado Christian fought through the second round to overtake No. 13-ranked Dallas Baptist and win the overall team title. The Cougars, who trailed the Patriots by two strokes after round one 286 (-2) to 288 (E), posted a 278 (-10) through the final 18 holes to finish ten strokes below par with a 566.

On the flip side, Sam Jenkins maintained his first-place position after shooting a 67 (-5) through the first round and following it up with a 69 (-3) today to win the individual championship with a 136 (-8) on his scorecard.

As a unit, Fort Lewis shaved off 15 strokes from its opening round to post a 290 (+2) on the final day of competition. The Skyhawks' 595 (+19) total was enough to edge Westminster (596, +20) and Arkansas Fort Smith (597, +21) but not enough to catch Western New Mexico and Cal State Stanislaus who tied for sixth with 584s (+8).

Jordan Jennings and Jackson Rottschafer each notched the best single-round scores of any Skyhawk with a one-under (71) finish on the day, but Ronald Kildall III held his front-running spot among the squad as he tied for 25th with a 146 total (+2) after following up his first-round par with a two-over outing to close out the tournament.
