Volleyball falls to #17 Mavericks on the road

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball nearly clawed their way back in set two but ultimately dropped a three-set match to No. 17 Colorado Mesa University to close out the opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Fort Lewis dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play while Colorado Mesa improved to 8-2, 2-0 RMAC.

The Mavericks hit .347 for the match and held the Skyhawks to a .099 efficiency. Colorado Mesa benefited from 13 blocks and 38 digs compared to six blocks and 26 digs for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks had the upper hand at the service line where they dropped in eight blocks. Junior Ella Butler led the way at the line with a match-high five aces to go along with five kills and four digs. Fifth-year JJ Curry led the team with 11 kills on a .409 efficiency. Freshman Maddy Shumway led the way with five digs and contributed a pair of aces.

In the first set, the Mavericks quickly jumped ahead 8-3 before a kill from Curry slowed the momentum. Sophomores Alina Nunez and Jordan DeJesus added a pair of kills to make it a three-point set before Colorado Mesa exploded on an 8-0 run to see a 17-6 lead. The teams traded points down the stretch, but the damage was done, and the Mavericks ended the set on a Skyhawks error for a 25-12 win.

The Skyhawks took an early lead in the second, but it swapped sides when three errors allowed for a 7-4 Maverick lead. Colorado Mesa went on to see an 11-6 lead before a kill from Curry prompted a side out. Butler went to the line to serve and rattled off four service aces in a string of eight points to make it 14-11, Skyhawks. Fort Lewis held onto the lead with kills from Lauren Shea and Curry, but Colorado Mesa responded with a run to grab an 18-17 edge. The teams would become tied six times late in the set, but the Mavericks threw the last punch with two points to earn a 26-24 win.

The third set was tied multiple times early, including a 6-6 score thanks to a kill by senior Alexis Hobie. Fort Lewis stayed close with side out kills to tie the score multiple times through the midway point, but the Mavericks opened up a lead with a 5-0 scoring run. The Skyhawks rattled off three points with kills by Hobie and an attacking error, but Colorado Mesa scored on a 7-2 run to make it 24-17. The Skyhawks extended the match with two more points before the home team found an eventual kill to end it.

Fort Lewis (2-8, 0-2 RMAC) makes its long-awaited return to Whalen Gymnasium next week with a Friday/Saturday split. White out weekend begins with a 6:00 p.m. match on Friday against Colorado Christian and continues on Saturday against Chadron State at 7:00 p.m. The first 50 fans through the door on Friday will receive a free white t-shirt courtesy of Durango Motor Company.
