Volleyball drops home opener to CCU

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball fell in their home opener on Friday night, dropping a three-set match to Colorado Christian University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Fort Lewis dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play while Colorado Christian improved to 7-4 on the year and 2-1 in the league.

The Skyhawks faced injuries coming into the match and were forced to shift pieces around. In part to those fluctuations, the team was limited to hitting just .096 on the night. The Cougars clocked a .270 efficiency. Colorado Christian was also elite from the service line and dropped in six aces.

Fort Lewis was led by sophomore Jordan DeJesus who earned 10 kills, followed by senior Alexis Hobie's eight-kill outing. Fifth-year JJ Curry was the most efficient option and totaled five kills on 12 swings (.250). Senior Natalia Lambos racked up 27 assists to go along with five digs. Sophomore Alina Nunez and freshman Emery Pomroy tied for the team lead with seven digs apiece.

The Skyhawks began the first set with an immediate advantage and extended it to three points at 7-4 with a Nunez kill. Colorado Christian responded with a 9-1 scoring run to make it 15-9 before a crafty kill from Lambos earned a sideout. Fort Lewis saw three-straight points late in the set after kills from fifth-year Lauren Shea and Hobie made it 20-16. The duo fueled another run down the stretch for a 23-20 score, but the Cougars closed it out with a block and kill out of the middle.

The teams played close early in set two with four ties comprising the opening 10 points. From there, Colorado Christian would use a nine-point scoring surge to capture a 12-4 lead. The visitors earned another three points, followed by three for the Skyhawks with a pair of attacking errors and a Hobie kill making it 15-8. Fort Lewis played even down the stretch, but the lead was insurmountable, and another kill from the middle ended it in a 25-18 score.

The third set saw the Cougars go ahead by three points before the Skyhawks responded with a run, capped off by a block from Shea and Curry, to make it 6-4. Fort Lewis had another run of four points which was highlighted by two DeJesus kills and a solo stuff by Lambos for a 10-5 lead. Colorado Christian pulled within one after a kill on the pin made it 14-13, but Fort Lewis found the next two points to make it a three-point edge. The Cougars threatened again and eventually scored three in a row to make their first lead of the set at 20-19. Redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie stepped up with a pair of blocks to give her team a 22-20, but Colorado Christian managed to score the match's final five points to end the set in a 25-22 score.

Fort Lewis (2-9, 0-3 RMAC) is back home tomorrow night with a 7 PM match against Chadron State College (2-9, 0-3 RMAC). The Eagles are coming off a three-set loss to Western Colorado and have lost their last four matches.
