Skyhawks volleyball earns first sweep over (RV) Mavericks for first time since 2009

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball teamed earned a three-set win over (RV) Colorado Mesa University on Saturday evening, the first sweep over the Mavericks since 2009 and the first win over a ranked or receiving votes team since the spring of 2021—when teams played a condensed spring schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Skyhawks improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play to sit in a tie for second in the league. The Mavericks dropped to 10-5 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. The match clocked in at one hour and 48 minutes which highlights the extended rallies and defensive prowess for both sides.

Fort Lewis hit .221 for the match and limited Colorado Mesa to a season-low efficiency of .150. The three-set loss was the first for the Mavericks this season. The Skyhawks earned 52 kills compared to 38 for the Mavericks. The teams combined for 143 digs and 10 blocks in the effort.

Freshman Cambria Freymuth earned a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs, followed by 11 kills for Jordan DeJesus. Junior Ellie Ames and senior Ryli Kalahiki combined for 13 kills while hitting over .400 on the night. Freshman Arianna Reyna and sophomore Addie Garn coordinated the offense and earned 25 assists and 14 assists, respectively. Freshman Alyx Daugherty led the team defensively with 22 digs while dishing out nine assists.

The Skyhawks jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set following back-to-back kills from DeJesus. Colorado Mesa responded with a string of points to tie the set, and the teams played to four ties down the stretch to see a 15-15 score. Kalahiki and Freymuth combined for kills to give the Skyhawks a lead, but Colorado Mesa flipped the script with a 5-2 run to see a 23-22 lead. An error and a kill from Butler made it set point Fort Lewis, and the senior tallied two more late in the set for a 26-24 lead.

Fort Lewis jumped ahead to another 7-3 lead in the second set and extended it to 12-8 later on following a kill from Freymuth. The Mavericks made it a one-point difference after a block on the outside, and the teams went back-and-forth from there until Fort Lewis opened a 19-15 lead. Colorado Mesa managed to tie the score at 23-23 with a kill from the outside, but the Skyhawks ended the set with kills from Nunez and DeJesus to take a two-set lead.

The Mavericks led the third set early on, and the teams played to eight tied scores until Colorado Mesa errors made it 17-15. The two-point differential held until a kill from Freymuth and attacking error on the Mavericks made it 20-17. Colorado Mesa held within striking distance with a kill to make it 22-20, but Fort Lewis reached set point after a kill from Munson clipped a Colorado Mesa played. The Mavericks benefited from an attacking error, but the Skyhawks closed out the match after an attacking error ended a long rally.
