Skyhawks snap Grizzlies’ win streak behind Butler’s career night

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Senior middle blocker Ella Butler came away with a career high nine blocks in a road win over Adams State University on Friday, limiting the Grizzlies to hit just .118 and snapping a six-match win streak for the home team.

With the win, Fort Lewis College improved to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Adams State dropped to 10-10 on the year and 5-4 in league play.

The Skyhawks hit .191 for the match, aided by a .423 efficiency in the fourth set the earn the win. Fort Lewis earned six aces, 10 blocks, and 83 digs in the effort.
Defense was the difference maker in the match, both in the front and back row. Freshman Alyx Daugherty came away with 25 digs for her fifth 20+ dig match of the season, followed by junior Jordan DeJesus and senior Chloe Ruhl with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. Butler was the ironwoman at the net with six solo blocks and three block assists.

Junior Alina Nunez led the team with 15 kills while hitting .424, followed by DeJesus with 12 kills on the night. Freshman Caroline Munson came on in the final three sets and earned eight kills while hitting .429. Freshman Arianna Reyna added 25 assists and a career-high five aces while sophomore Addie Garn had 20 assists and nine digs.

Fort Lewis spent most of the first set in a deficit before capitalizing on a five point scoring run to take a 19-18 lead. The Grizzlies earned a side out to tie the score, and the teams played to three ties late into the set. Adams State used a pair of Fort Lewis errors to close out the set in a 25-22 score.

The Skyhawks trimmed an early lead for the Grizzlies and eventually knotted the score at 10-10 following Reyna's third ace of the match. Butler turned up the defense at the net with a pair of blocks to make it a 15-11 lead, and Fort Lewis held onto a 21-19 lead heading into a late timeout. The Grizzlies clawed back to reach set point thanks to a five point run, but Nunez rattled off three kills for a 26-24 win.

Set three saw 11 tied scores before three-straight kills from Munson gave Fort Lewis a 14-11 lead. Kiya Wilson gave the Skyhawks their largest lead of the night with a trio of her own kills, but the Grizzlies came back with a run of their own to know the score at 18-all. The teams traded the lead before two kills from Nunez forced an Adams State timeout at 22-20. Butler put away her fifth block of the night for set point, and Ryli Kalahiki used the block for a 25-20 win.

An onslaught of attacking errors made it a sizable early lead for Fort Lewis, forcing an Adams State timeout with the score at 8-2. The lead remained comfortable for the Skyhawks after kills from Wilson and Butler combined with Reyna's fifth ace for a 15-7 lead. The Skyhawks went on to see a 20-8 lead and ended the set on a kill and Adams State error to earn the win.

Fort Lewis (13-5, 7- RMAC) will continue its road trip tomorrow with a 3:00 PM first serve against New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. Fort Lewis is 1-1 against the Cowgirls this season, both matches ending in four sets.
