Volleyball improves record with tough road win over Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – An 18-16 fifth set went to the Skyhawks in a gritty outing against New Mexico Highlands, giving the Fort Lewis College volleyball its fifth win in its last six outings to improve to 14-5 on the year and 8-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play—the third-best mark in the league.

The Skyhawks hit .323 on the match to mark a season-best efficiency while limiting the Cowgirls to a .230 mark—the third-best efficiency for an opponent this season. The Cowgirls amassed nine aces and the Skyhawks earned eight blocks. Fort Lewis out dug New Mexico Highlands 62-59.

Nine players tallied kills for Fort Lewis, led by junior Alina Nunez with 14. Junior Jordan DeJesus went off for a double double with 13 kills (.367) and 14 digs. Freshman Caroline Munson put away 10 kills on 14 chances for an efficiency of .714, ranking second in program history in single match hitting efficiency in the range of 10-14 attacks.

Senior Ella Butler, the player who set the single match hitting efficiency record in 2022 (.750) came away with nine kills (.471), followed by senior Ryli Kalahiki and freshman Cambria Freymuth with six each. Freshman Arianna Reyna dished out 28 assists while sophomore Addie Garn contributed 21. Freshman Alyx Daugherty was stout defensively with 18 digs to go along with five assists.

Fort Lewis maintained an early lead in the first set thanks to a balanced offense featuring kills from five players for a 10-7 lead. The lead grew as the scoring run extended, making it 14-7 in favor of the Skyhawks following a kill from Butler. The Cowgirls were forced into a timeout at 18-10 when Nunez put away the team's third block of the set, and the team closed out the opener in a 25-13 score following a service error. Fort Lewis hit .400 in the first set and limited NMHU to a .071 clip.
The Skyhawks began the second set in a hole thanks to a scoring run from the Cowgirls, eventually pulling within four off an ace from Butler. Wilson strung together points thanks to savvy play, and the duo of Butler and Kalahiki combined for kills and a one-point difference. Fort Lewis took a brief lead, but an ace gave NMHU a 15-14 edge at the media break. The Cowgirls refused to let up and extended the lead to 21-16, forcing a timeout for the Skyhawks. An overturned call eventually ended the set in favor of the Cowgirls, 25-18.

NMHU enjoyed another hot start to open the third set before Fort Lewis' Munson gave her team its first lead at 6-5. The Cowgirls use their block to pull within a pair after trailing by as many as four points, and the teams traded attacking errors for a 13-11 Skyhawks lead. Errors added up for Fort Lewis late in the set, allowing NMHU to tie things up at 18-all. The home team grabbed a late lead, but a kill by Reyna and Butler block tied the score at 22-22. The teams tied at 23 apiece, but two attacking errors gave the Cowgirls a 25-23 win.

Ivy Schoditsch entered the match in the fourth set and immediately aided Fort Lewis in grabbing a 6-2 lead with a block and kill. The senior added an ace to her stat line to force a Cowgirls timeout with the lead at 11-5. The lead extended to 16-7 thanks to back-to-back kills off the hand of Nunez—giving her double-digit kills in the match. The Skyhawks reached 20 points after an attacking error on the Cowgirls and Freymuth put it away with a kill and a 25-13 score. After stumbling offensively in sets two and three, Fort Lewis hit a blistering .517 in the fourth to capture the set.

The Skyhawks trailed by two in the fifth set after an overpass was put away by Schoditsch. Fort Lewis trailed 8-4 when the teams switched sides after a swing on the pin sailed long. Freymuth used the block for a kill, followed by an ace from Schoditsch and another kill for an 8-8 score. Chloe Ruhl swapped serving duties with Schoditsch and added an ace of her own—the second between the two servers in one rotation—to give the Skyhawks the lead. The Cowgirls strung together four points to reclaim the lead to force a timeout with the score flipped to 12-10. Kalahiki kept Fort Lewis within one point thanks to two kills out of the break, and Nunez ultimately tied the score at 13-13 with a shot to the deep corner. Munson and DeJesus fought off match points as the set moved to extra points and kills by Freymuth and Kalahiki secured the win in an 18-16 score.

Fort Lewis (14-5, 8-2 RMAC) hosts a power pod for the first time since the league introduced the structure, welcoming UCCS and Mines to Whalen for three matches across three days. The Skyhawks open play on Thursday, October 30 with a match against UCCS and play again on Saturday against Mines. Friday features a matchup with UCCS and Mines. Both UCCS and Mines have been in and out of the national rankings this season.
