10/23/2025 10:47:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – For the second time this season, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team will travel to take on Adams State University and New Mexico Highlands—this time in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.

Last Time Out
There was a lot to be optimistic about for the 12-5 Skyhawks after splitting matches at home last week. First, the team earned a decisive three set win over Western Colorado to kick off homecoming on Tuesday. In the win, Fort Lewis hit .267 on the night, digging themselves out of an early hole after hitting just .105 in the opening set. The team went on to hit .462 in set two and .297 in the final set to earn the win. Western Colorado was limited to hitting just .055—the second lowest efficiency allowed for Fort Lewis this season.

Every active player on the Fort Lewis roster saw court time, and the team earned kills from 12 Skyhawks. Junior Alina Nunez led the team with nine kills on 18 chances (.398) while freshman Cambria Freymuth contributed nine kills to go along with six digs. Senior Ella Butler was efficient with six kills on eight swings, including a 5-for-5 second set.

Fort Lewis went on to drop a heartbreaking five setter to Colorado School of Mines, a team that has been receiving national recognition throughout the year, on Friday. The teams combined for 168 digs and 19 blocks in a match that saw extended rallies and hitting percentages hovering north of .100. Overall, Mines used a dominant fifth set to ultimately hit .138 for the match while Fort Lewis was limited to a .093 efficiency. The Orediggers won the service battle as well with nine aces compared to five for the Skyhawks. There is such a thing as a "quality loss" in sports, and this will be one that Fort Lewis will reflect upon.

What's at Stake?
Fort Lewis surpassed its win total from 2024 (12) with its sweep over Western Colorado. With eight matches left to play in the regular season, the Skyhawks look to capitalize on an excellent start and finish strong heading into postseason opportunities. Additionally, the Skyhawks have earned seven, three-set wins through 17 matches. The team totaled just three sweeps in 26 games last season, four sweeps in 2023, and three in 2022. Fort Lewis has not amassed seven sweeps since the 2008 season.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies are 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference after winning their last six matches. The team earned road wins over Black Hills State (3-1) and South Dakota Mines (3-0) last week. Adams State is one win away from matching its victory total from the 2024 season.

Adams State is hitting .208 on the year while allowing a .204 efficiency from the opposition. The Grizzlies are out-serving their opponents with 1.6 aces per set and add 1.7 blocks per set. The team averages 15.6 digs per set.
Hadleigh Richardson is leading the team and the conference by averaging 4.35 kills per set—a vast improvement on her 1.92 kills per set mark as a junior. She opposite has 300 kills to her credit, tripling her total from 2024 and giving her 454 for her career. Olivia Lunt follows with 2.51 kills per set while Katie Bauer provides 2.05 per set on a team-best .333 efficiency. The team has used three setters, each of which average over five assists per set. On defense, Logan Conlin leads all players with 3.69 digs per set while tallying 331 receptions.

Fort Lewis faced Adams State in its non-conference regional pod outing, falling in four sets in Alamosa. The Skyhawks were limited to hitting just .157 for the match compared to a .255 clip for the Cougars. Adams State held the advantage in digs (60-58), blocks (8-4), and aces (11-7).

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls are 8-11 overall and 3-5 in league play following a split against South Dakota Mines (L, 3-0) and Black Hills State (W, 3-0). Fort Lewis has already faced the Cowgirls twice this season with a four-set win and loss evening the series heading into Saturday's match.

NMHU is hitting .176 this season compared to a .194 efficiency for its opponents. The team averages 1.8 aces, 1.9 receiving errors, and 17 digs per set. Four players average over two kills per set, led by Arianna Jamerson at 2.72 in 540 attempts. Aziza Morris and Jaylee Gonzales follow with 2.64 and 2.09 per set, respectively. Three setters see court time, led by Marissa Sandoval-Moya at 4.47 assists per set. Becca Wiersema leads the defense with 4.19 digs per set and has committed 26 receiving errors.
