Volleyball pushes Orediggers to five sets, falls in defensive battle

DURANGO, Colo. – A defensive juggernaut went the way of Colorado School of Mines (13-4, 4-3 RMAC) in conference volleyball action on Friday with Fort Lewis College (12-5, 6-2 RMAC) pushing the Orediggers to five sets inside of Whalen Gym.

The teams combined for 168 digs and 19 blocks in a match that saw extended rallies and hitting percentages hovering north of .100. Overall, Mines used a dominant fifth set to ultimately hit .138 for the match while Fort Lewis was limited to a .093 efficiency. The Orediggers won the service battle as well with nine aces compared to five for the Skyhawks.

Freshman Alyx Daugherty headlined the defensive efforts wit a match-high 28 digs, followed by senior Chloe Ruhl with a season-high of 16. Freshman setter Arianna Reyna earned a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs. Junior Jordan DeJesus was the lone Fort Lewis player to reach double-digit kills with 11 to go along with seven digs. Seniors Ella Butler and Ryli Kalahiki were the most efficient options, hitting .286 and .316, respectively.

Fort Lewis (12-5, 6-2 RMAC) returns to play next week with a road match against Adams State University (9-9, 4-3 RMAC).
