Volleyball heads to Face Grizzlies and Cowgirls in Regional Pod contests

DURANGO, Colo. – After sweeping competition last week on the road, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team will play a pair of regional "pod" matches away from home against Adams State and New Mexico Highlands.

Regional pod matches feature games against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents but do not count toward conference standings.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks had an efficient week with sweeps over Chadron State College and Regis University. The win over Chadron State was the first victory in the Chicoine Center since 2013. The Skyhawks put together a balanced offensive night, hitting .265 with 51 kills compared to .172 and 32 kills for the Eagles. Fort Lewis also held the edge in serving (six aces) and defense (64 digs).

In the win over Regis, the team hit .182 for the match and -.038 in the final set but used strong service pressure (seven aces) and stout defense at the net (nine blocks) to secure the win. Fort Lewis held the edge in digs with 45 and put away 35 kills.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies are 5-9 this season and 1-3 in conference play with a sweep over New Mexico Highlands. Adams State opened its regional pod play on Tuesday with a five-set victory over NMHU.

Adams State is hitting .194 this season compared to a .222 efficiency for its opponents. Despite the deficit in hitting percentage, it is a 20-point improvement from the 2024 mark. The Grizzlies are averaging 1.3 aces, 15.1 digs, and 1.7 blocks per set.

The team is led by Hadleigh Richardson who ranks second in the conference with 4.24 kills per set—doubling her output from last season and improving her efficiency by over 100 points. Olivia Lunt (2.41 k/s) and Katie Bauer (1.96 k/s) follow as the next two producers. The team has rotated three setters this season with Peyton Priddy starting seven matches and averaging 4.86 assists per set. Logan Conlin patrols the back row with 3.46 digs per set, and Rowan Tribelhorn leads defense at the net with .91 blocks per set.

Fort Lewis has dropped the last two meetings between the teams, including a 3-1 loss at home and a 3-0 sweep in a neutral site match in Colorado Springs. Prior to those losses, the Skyhawks had won four-straight against the Grizzlies.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls are 4-9 this season with an 0-4 record in conference play having lost their last five matches. Two matches in that stretch went to five sets (Westminster, Adams State). Fort Lewis faced NMHU in the second match of the season where it earned a four-set win in Silver City.

NMHU is hitting .162 this season while allowing for a .205 efficiency from the opposition. The Cowgirls average 1.6 aces, 16.7 digs, and 1.1 blocks per set.

Individually, Aziza Morris is leading the team with 2.47 kills per set, followed by Arianna Jamerson at 2.39 per set. Four additional players are averaging at least one kills per set. The team has used three setters, led by Naya Dornic with 4.08 assists per set. Becca Wiersema leads the defense with 3.90 digs per set.

What's at Stake?
Fort Lewis is one win away from matching its win total from the 2024 season (10). With 14 matches left to play, the Skyhawks look to capitalize on an excellent start and finish strong heading into postseason opportunities. Additionally, the Skyhawks have earned five, three-set wins through 11 matches. The team totaled just three sweeps in 26 games last season, four sweeps in 2023, and three in 2022. Fort Lewis has not amassed five sweeps since the 2017 season.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has improved across most major statistical categories this season, led by digs per set where the team is up over four digs to average 18.6 per set this year—ranking ninth in NCAA DII. Additionally, the Skyhawks are hitting .208 (.152 in 2024) while averaging 1.8 aces (1.3 in 2024).

Senior middle blocker Ella Butler is off to a fantastic start by averaging 2.44 kills per set on a .350 efficiency—a mark that ranks 4th in the RMAC. Junior Jordan DeJesus is playing equally as well while ranking 15th in the league at 2.73 kills per set at a .229 efficiency (.154 in 2024). Freshman Cambria Freymuth has added valuable offensive and defensive abilities as a six rotation outside hitter, averaging 2.83 kills and 2.80 digs per set.

For the first time in three seasons, the Skyhawks are running a 6-2 offense with freshman Arianna Reyna and sophomore Addie Garn distributing the ball. Reyna averages 5.88 assists per set while Garn averages 3.84 per set and leads the team in total aces (17). Sophomore Emery Pomroy is pacing the RMAC with 4.89 digs per set, followed by freshman Alyx Daugherty at 3.71 digs per set (11th-RMAC).

Around the RMAC
Fort Lewis is tied for second in the RMAC with its 9-2 record The Skyhawks rank first in opponent blocks (1.49), first in digs (18.58, 9th-DII), first in opponent hitting percentage (.152), eighth in hitting percentage (.208), and third in service aces (1.77).
Individually, Butler ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.350), DeJesus is 15th in kills per set (2.73), Reyna is seventh in assists per set (5.88), aces per set is represented by Addie Garm (7th, .40), Alyx Daugherty (11th, .38), and Chloe Ruhl (.36). Emery Pomroy is first in digs per set (4.89) while Daugherty is 11th (3.71).

Fort Lewis (9-2, 3-1 RMAC) remains on the road for a Tuesday match next week against Westminster University. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday against Colorado Mesa for a 4:00 PM match.
