Skyhawks volleyball falls to New Mexico Highlands in four

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University (5-9, 0-4 RMAC) was on the winning end of a four-set match versus the Fort Lewis College (9-4, 3-1 RMAC) volleyball team to even the series at one win apiece in the 2025 season.

The Skyhawks hit .146 for the match compared to a .140 clip for the Cowgirls. New Mexico Highlands had the advantage at the service line with nine aces compared to three for the Skyhawks.

Junior Alina Nunez and freshman Cambria Freymuth led the team with nine kills each, followed by senior Ella Butler with eight. Senior Ryli Kalahiki has seven kills while hitting .400 for the match. Freshman Alyx Daugherty led the team with 18 digs, followed by sophomore Addie Garn (11), Arianna Reyna (10), and Chloe Ruhl (10).

The first set featured several tied scores early on before a six-point scoring run forced an early timeout with the Skyhawks trailing 11-5. Fort Lewis rallied out of the break and pulled within three points at 15-12 thanks to kills from three different players. Butler kept her team within closing distance thanks to her fourth kill in as many swings, and a combined four attacking errors gave the Skyhawks a 19-18 lead. Ellie Ames sent back a pair of blocks out of a timeout, but the Cowgirls rallied and scored the final five points to take a 26-24 set.

The Skyhawks responded with a 5-1 lead in set two thanks to a serving run by Freymuth, but New Mexico Highlands answered by tying things up at 7-7. Fort Lewis made it a two-point set and carried the lead into the media timeout after a Cowgirls attacking error made it 15-12. Rylie Kalahiki and Ames extended the lead to 20-15 to mark the biggest edge of the set, but the Cowgirls earned a side out kill to stall the momentum. A service error gave Fort Lewis set point and another error on New Mexico Highlands ended it in a 25-17 score.

Fort Lewis jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set and extended the lead to four points after a Kalahiki kill. The Cowgirls answered with a pair of scoring runs to take a 12-11 lead. The home team continued to lead late into the set thanks to attacking errors for Fort Lewis and forced a timeout with the score at 21-16. Garn dropped in a kill out of the break, and two more points pulled the Skyhawks within three. Kalahiki extended the set with her fifth kill, but the Cowgirls closed it out with a kill from the pin.

Ames put away a kill in the fourth set to cut the New Mexico Highlands lead to 8-5, followed by an ace from Ruhl for a two-point difference. The Cowgirls answered with a scoring run to bring on a Skyhawks timeout at 12-6. Fort Lewis scored five of the next six points, capped off by a block from Butler and Nunez, for a 13-11 score. An ace from Reyna tied the score at 14-14, and the teams played back and forth heading into the late portion of the set. Kalahiki tied the score at 19-19 to force a Cowgirls timeout, and the home team picked up the next two points out of the break. Freymuth got Fort Lewis to 20 points

Fort Lewis (9-4, 3-1 RMAC) remains on the road for a Tuesday match next week against Westminster University. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday against Colorado Mesa for a 4:00 PM match.
