Fort Lewis mounts comeback win over Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was a fourth quarter outburst for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team that propelled the Skyhawks to a 4-0 record to start the year. The Skyhawks scored 26 points in the final quarter and took the lead in the final seven seconds en route to a 62-61 win over Angelo State University on Saturday.

Fort Lewis was led by junior Mayaka Porter who put up 15 points, followed by sophomore Katie Lamb with 14 points. Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti added 10 points and five rebounds. Junior Natalie Guanella and freshman Josie Davis combined for nine steals in the win.

The Skyhawks faced an early 6-0 deficit before Davis dropped in a layup at the 8:22 mark. Angelo State grew the lead to 15-3 midway though the quarter, but Fort Lewis narrowed the difference to six points at the end of the quarter thanks to a three from Lamb.

Porter began the second quarter with a jumper to make it 20-15 and hit another at the 8:29 for a 22-18 score. The low scoring quarter continued with a layup by freshman Savanna Dotray to pull Fort Lewis with three points, but the Belles ended the half with a layup in last 30 seconds to make it 29-22.

The Belles made it a 10-point difference after their first possession of the third quarter, and the Skyhawks began to chip away with a 10-1 scoring run to make it 37-35 with under five minutes on the clock. Angelo State ended the quarter at the free throw line to send the game to the fourth in a 44-36 score.

Free throws got the Skyhawks within six in the first minute of the fourth, and a layup by senior Deniece Ryan later on saw the score to 47-43. The teams were scoreless for the next minute before a layup from Lamb pulled Fort Lewis within one possession. A layup by Fonoti gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the night, and the teams traded the lead from there. The Belles grabbed a two-point lead with 15 seconds to go, but Lamb knocked down a three with eight seconds to go for a 62-61 score that held at the buzzer.

Fort Lewis (4-0) will head to Grand Junction for the Maverick Holiday Classic next week. The Skyhawks take on Sul Ross State on Friday, Nov. 28 followed by a game versus Simon Fraser University on Saturday.
