Men’s basketball opens RMAC play with 81-76 win over MSU Denver

Deng swipes fifth most steals in a game in program history

DENVER, Colo. – Three Skyhawks scored in double figures on Thursday night at Denver University's Hamilton Gymnasium, powering Fort Lewis men's basketball to a 50-point second-half to overcome an early deficit and post an 81-76 win over Metropolitan State University of Denver to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Fort Lewis capitalized for 24 points off of 13 MSU Denver turnovers in the second half alone to pull away, snap its four-game skid, and climb to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action. On the flip side, the Roadrunners dropped their fifth-straight, falling to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.

Chuol Deng and Stewart Erhart were at the heart of the Skyhawks' success, with the pair combining for 10 of FLC's 13 total steals. Deng went for a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting with eight rebounds, and seven steals, setting a new career-high and matching the program record for the fifth-most steals in a game. Erhart poured in 18 points, primarily thanks to a 10-of-13 performance at the free throw line, with six rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists. Jaxon Smith was the only other Skyhawk in double figures, adding 13 points on a pair of treys and a perfect 5-5 night at the line. Tate Ziemkiewicz nearly joined the trio, scoring a career-high nine points.

Quave Propst-Allison led the Roadrunners to a two-point lead heading into halftime, thanks to his 12 first-half points. Propst-Allison went on to finish with a team-high 18 points, on 7-16 shooting with a 4-9 clip from beyond the arc, and six assists. The lead was short-lived as the Skyhawks flipped the final lead change of the night, 39-38 at the 17:48 mark, thanks to a pair of made free throws from Massal Diouf, before stretching it out to as many as 12 points on five occasions to hold off the home team.

MSU Denver outshot Fort Lewis 45.6 percent (26-57) to 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field and 39.4 percent (13-33) to 21.1 percent (4-19) from deep; however, the blue and gold managed to convert 31 times on 38 trips (81.6 percent) to the charity stripe. The Roadrunners knocked down just 11 free throws in 16 attempts (68.8 percent). Nathan Francis aided Propst-Allison with 12 points thanks to a 4-of-7 night from the three-point line, and Garrett Falls was the only other Roadrunner to finish in double figures with 11 points.
