Skyhawks drop a pair to open conference play

MSU Denver takes 2-0 series lead

DENVER, Colo. – Unable to keep pace with the hot bats of MSU Denver (7-4, 2-0 RMAC), the Fort Lewis softball team (1-6, 0-2 RMAC) was felled 5-1 and 6-0 on the opening day of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play up at the Assembly Athletic Complex.

The Roadrunners, getting to play from the comforts of its home field after the series was moved to Denver due to winter weather conditions in Durango, Colo., out-hit the Skyhawks 20-7 on the afternoon and racked up eight extra-base hits. Senior outfield Faith Sgro and senior infielder Briana Jorgensen were the only players to notch two hits on the day. Senior outfielder Alexia Boring led all Roadrunners with four hits in seven at-bats with five runs scored, one double, one home run, a stolen base, and three runs batted in.

Sophomore right hander Natalie Romero (3-1) went the distance for MSU Denver, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball while allowing just a single earned run. In addition, despite surrendering one walk, Romero made a career-high ten strikeouts. Hailie Mann (0-3) toed the rubber for the Skyhawks and threw 6.0 innings, allowing ten hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts against two walks. Amiee Shanks (0-1) tossed the final inning on relief and walked one while striking out another.

Both squads scored in the second inning, with MSU Denver taking the early 1-0 lead on a Hannah DiFabio double that plated Adriana Bueno, who walked the at-bat prior. Fort Lewis responded, however, as Jorgensen led off the inning with a double to right field before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Cali Niccum.

MSU Denver later struck for one run in the top of the fifth inning on Boring's lead-off home run, before adding a trio of insurance runs in the top of the seventh frame thanks to a double from Boring and a two-run homer from senior catcher Jaiden Geist.

In game two, it was junior right hander Cheyenne Prieto (3-1) who earned the win throwing her third complete game in her fourth start of the year. Prieto's lone blemish on the afternoon was the three hits surrendered, otherwise throwing a clean sheet with three strikeouts. Freshman Addison Gavigan (1-1) was dealt the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work while walking two and striking out three. Shanks once again came in on relief, throwing the final 3.0 innings surrendering one earned run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts to her name.

In the first inning, the Roadrunners took an early 2-0 lead on a Prieto double following Boring and Geist reaching base by way of a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively. Later in the third, Bueno singled to drive in a single run. The last of the damage came in the fifth inning as MSUD strung together five hits, including one double, and a walk to score thrice.
