MSU Denver throws one-hitter to capture series, final game canceled due to weather

DENVER, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team (1-7, 0-3 RMAC) dropped its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series of the season to MSU Denver (8-4, 3-0 RMAC) on Monday afternoon, falling 8-0 in seven innings before the fourth and final game of the series was canceled.

Due to freezing temperatures at the Assembly Athletic Complex, and per Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference policies, the fourth and final game of the series was canceled.

Amiee Shanks (0-2) and Natalie Romero (4-1) were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings of play before MSU Denver exploded offensively through its final six outs. Shanks struck out two while allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits.

Romero, who posted a career-high ten strikeouts against Fort Lewis yesterday, was near perfect, throwing a one-hitter and complete game on just 70 total pitches with three strikeouts. Romero's lone blemish was a single from Natalie Rodman alongside Briana Jorgensen reaching on an error in the bottom of the first inning.

Senior outfielders Alexia Boring and Katie Maney, as well as senior catcher Jaiden Geist, led MSU Denver with two hits apiece. Geist led all players with two runs scored and two runs batted in while going 2-for-2 and recording one of five Roadrunner doubles.

After five scoreless innings, MSU Denver exploded for six runs on seven hits and one error in the top of the sixth frame. The Roadrunners strung together five straight hits with a suicide squeeze in between, before posting back-to-back doubles with two outs. Later in the top of the seventh, it was back-to-back doubles once again following a one-out single that plated the final two runs of the day.

Notes
-Fort Lewis now trails MSU Denver 56-17 all-time and 24-3 up in Denver, Colo.
-Natalie Rodman produced Fort Lewis' only hit of the day.
-Alyssa Fockler threw out the first base runner of her career on a caught-stealing attempt in the top of the fourth inning.
