Cougars escape in extras, take two from Skyhawks

Fort Lewis moves to 0-3 in extra-innings

DURANGO, Colo. – Redshirt junior Hailie Mann (0-5) threw a gritty 10-inning complete-game in the matinee, but within its fifth time through the lineup, Colorado Christian (14-6, 10-0 RMAC) finally broke through to escape with a 4-1 victory, adding to its 11-0 win in game one to take both games from Fort Lewis (2-12, 1-8 RMAC) in its 2025 home debut.

Colorado Christian 11, Fort Lewis 0
Colorado Christian jumped on Fort Lewis in the series' opening game, putting up a four-spot on two outs in the top of the first inning with a double, two singles, and an unforced error. The Cougars then produced two walks in the following innings, and ultimately, a lead-off walk in the fourth inning chased out Chloe Padilla (1-2), who gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits and five walks, leading to her second loss of the season. Amiee Shanks (0-4) through the final 4.0 innings of relief and surrendered seven runs, five earned, on six hits and one walk.

CCU later tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, utilizing a throwing error to swipe home and a sacrifice fly the follow at-bat to bring home the runner from third base. Back-to-back singles set the stage for another sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning, and later a pair of doubles, a single, a fielder's choice, and an error, would bring in the final four runs for the invaders from Denver, Colo., in the top of the seventh inning.

McMullin (4-2), who moved to third base in game two, went the distance for the second time this season en route to her team-leading fourth victory in the circle. McMullin scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out another on 69 total pitches.

Colorado Christian 4, Fort Lewis 1 (10 Inn.)
An entirely different Skyhawks lineup made an appearance in game two, led by Mann in the circle, who did all she could on 158 total pitches, 104 of which were thrown for strikes. Emma Duncan (4-2) made the start for Colorado Christian, and the duo provided a pitchers' duel through and through.

The Cougars were the first to threaten early, putting runners on second and third in the top of the third inning with just one out. Mann, however, forced a pop-fly in foul territory and fly ball to right field and escaped the jam. CCU stayed aggressive, however, and finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Colorado Christian manufactured its first run of the day by stealing second base after a lead-off walk before a passed ball set the stage for a sacrifice fly to center field.

Fort Lewis responded promptly, however, using small-ball to force the tie. McKenna Timmons opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to center field, and Emalynn Redmann moved the freshman to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Two at-bats later, Mykel Torres singled up the left field line to bring Timmons home without a throw to the plate.

The Skyhawks best chance of the contest came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Fort Lewis chased out Duncan for Hanna Espinoza (1-1) with a runner on first. Espinoza walked the following two batters to load the bases, bringing Duncan back in to pitch, who found a two-out strikeout to escape the game-threatening situation. The back-and-forth contest went until the tenth inning, when once again with two outs, Colorado Christian capitalized on its fifth trip through the lineup to score thrice on a double and a two-run home run from Danae Lopez. Fort Lewis went three-up, three-down in its final chance, giving Carson Griggs (1-0) her first win of the season after tossing 3.0 innings of no-hit relief while striking out two.
