Cold bats cage Skyhawks against red-hot Cougars

Jorgensen belts her first home run of the year

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis' nine total hits across the afternoon were not enough to keep pace with conference-leading Colorado Christian as the Cougars racked up 26 hits under the bluebird sky to sweep the Skyhawks in its first home series on Aspen Field.

Fort Lewis fell to 2-14 overall and 1-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Colorado Christian won its 12th straight game to advance to 16-6 overall and remain a perfect 12-0 against RMAC opponents.

Colorado Christian 9, Fort Lewis 2
The Cougars flashed their fangs in the opening contest once again, scoring a single run in each of the game's first three innings. Back-to-back walks set the stage for a bases-clearing double in the first inning, and a single through the middle and an error plated the other two in the second and third innings, respectively.

The Skyhawks jumped into the game quickly, scoring in the bottom of the opening inning on a first-pitch home run to left field off the bat of senior third basemen Briana Jorgensen, her first of the season and the second of her career, after Emalynn Redmann was put on base via a hit-by-pitch.

Colorado Christian, however, would tack on to its lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Fort Lewis, however, would see only two base runners and put just one in scoring position through the final 6.0 innings of play. Addison Gavigan (1-2) was dealt the loss, going just 4.1 innings, while Amiee Shanks (0-4) threw the final 2.2 innings. Sophomore Elyse McMullin (5-2) picked up her second win over FLC, tossing her fourth complete game of the season and surrendering just the two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

Colorado Christian 9, Fort Lewis 2
For the third time in the four-game series, Colorado Christian drew first blood in the top of the first inning. The Cougars, with two outs, strung together back-to-back singles before a double down the left-field line pushed the pair across.

In the top of the fourth frame, CCU doubled up on its lead by taking advantage of a throwing error on an infield single to push across two. Fort Lewis finally found life in the bottom half of the inning, as Jorgensen doubled to left-center field to bring around Faith Sgro from first base. Two at-bats later, Natalie Rodman singled through the left side to bring around Jorgensen. Colorado Christian would add to its lead with a solo home run in the top of the fifth and another pair of crooked two-run frames in the sixth and seventh innings.

Hailie Mann (0-6) surrendered the loss with nine runs, seven earned, 15 hits, and two walks to her name. Mann also struck out a game-high four batters. Shanks once again came in on relief and sacrificed one hit in her 0.2 innings of work. Emma Duncan (5-2) went home with the win, scattering six hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out three.
