Women's basketball stumbles in home loss to Adams State

DURANGO, Colo. – After the Skyhawks women's basketball team pulled within five points in the third quarter, the Adams State University squad exploded on a scoring run to end the game in a 79-49 final on Tuesday evening.

Fort Lewis fell to 6-15 overall and 3-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State improved to 14-8 on the year and 9-4 in the league.

The Skyhawks struggled shooting and ended the game with a 30.3 percent (20-of-66) clip from the field. The Grizzlies shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field and benefited from 12 made three-pointers. The visitors doubled up the Skyhawks from the stripe with 14 chances. The teams were even with 43 rebounds apiece.

Senior Darla Hernandez was the lone Fort Lewis player to reach double-figures with 11 on the night. Senior Livia Knapp followed with eight points. Sophomore Trista Hoobler led the way with seven rebounds and added five points.

The Skyhawks played with a one-point lead through the first two minutes of the game until a five-point burst by the Grizzlies gave the visitors a lead. Adams State extended the lead to nine points before a layup by sophomore Natalie Guanella made it 12-5. Senior Eva Kingston cut the difference to five points with under a minute on the clock, and junior Deniece Ryan rolled in a last-second layup for a 14-11 score at the buzzer.

Adams State began adding to its lead early in the second quarter, eventually making it a double-digit difference after five minutes. Freshman Katie Lamb nailed a shot from the perimeter to see a 26-16 score, and the teams went shot-for-shot in the final four minutes to make it 35-23 after two quarters.

The teams traded points after one minute of play in the third quarter, then a two-minute drought was snapped by back-to-back threes for Fort Lewis to make it 36-31. Five points is as close as it would get, and Adams State enjoyed a 15-0 scoring run to lead 51-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

The high-scoring fourth quarter began at the free throw line with two makes by the Grizzlies, and the Skyhawks eventually got on the board at the 7:51 mark with a made free throw. Lamb and Knapp combined for buckets, but Adams State responded to each shot and ended the game with five made three-pointers to earn a 79-49 win.

Fort Lewis (6-15, 3-10 RMAC) will wrap up the week on Saturday at New Mexico Highlands (9-9, 6-6 RMAC) with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off in Las Vegas.
