UCCS takes two from Fort Lewis on Saturday

Jorgensen enjoys three-hit afternoon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team (2-16, 1-12 RMAC) fell behind two games to none on Saturday afternoon on the Front Range as UCCS (13-9, 8-5 RMAC) opened the two team's four-game conference series with a pair of 7-2 and 3-1 victories on Mountain Lion Field.

UCCS 7, Fort Lewis 2
UCCS' offense lived up to the hype in the opening doubleheader of the series as the RMAC's second-hottest offense, boasting a .361 team average, plated seven runs on eight hits and took advantage of three walks and three errors. Six different Mountain Lions registered a hit in the contest, but sophomore Gianna Pancost and freshman Taylor McCombs, the reigning Week 5 RMAC Player of the Week, led the offense with 2-for-3 outings. Thanks to a pair of doubles, McCombs scored three runs and drew one walk while Pancost recorded two runs batted in (RBI).

The Mountain Lions would score one run in nearly every inning except the bottom half of the sixth and seventh frames. UCCS' biggest inning, however, came in the bottom of the fourth when the Skyhawks committed all three errors and surrendered three hits for the trio of scores. Seniors Emalynn Redmann and Briana Jorgensen notched the only singles for FLC.

Junior Kailey Bond (3-1) cruised to her third victory of the season in the circle, surrendering two runs in total, only one of which was earned on a second-inning solo home run from Cali Niccum, on three total hits and three walks. Bond struck out five. Amiee Shanks (0-5) was dealt the loss with four earned runs, seven hits, three walks, and three strikeouts charged to the senior's final line.

UCCS 3, Fort Lewis 1
For the second-straight series, the Skyhawks flipped a switch heading into game two, primarily off the back of redshirt junior right-hander Hailie Mann (0-7) in the circle. While Mann did take the loss and allow three earned runs, the Tucson, Ariz., native scattered five hits and held UCCS hit-less in four of her six innings of work. Mann also struck out five without giving up a walk.

Fort Lewis out-hit UCCS in game two, picking up seven hits against the Mountain Lions five, but it was a single, double, and two-run home run off the bat of sophomore Mackenzie Scott that were strung together to produce all three runs scored for UCCS in the bottom of the fifth inning. Six Skyhawks registered hits, but Jorgensen stood as the only player with two hits in game two, including her fourth double of the season. Skyler Dietz also belted her first double and second extra-base hit of the season.

Freshman Hannah Hunt (7-2) picked up her team-leading seventh win of the year, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing seven hits and two walks against a game-high six strikeouts. Freshman Lauren Falk made her seventh appearance of the season and threw one hitless inning en route to her third save of 2025.

Notes
-UCCS leads Fort Lewis 77-45 all-time and 45-19 over in Colorado Springs, Colo.
-Briana Jorgensen led all Skyhawks, going a combined 3-for-6 with one double and one walk.
-Fort Lewis stranded 14 base runners across the afternoon.
