Crooked innings sink Skyhawks in Sunday doubleheader

Milliman sets new career high with 5-for-7 day at the plate

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team out-hit its opposition 16-11 for the afternoon, but unable to drive in the 16 runners left on base, the Skyhawks (2-20, 1-16 RMAC) instead fell 7-6 in game one and 4-2 in game two against the ThunderWolves (13-12, 12-6 RMAC) at the Rawlings Softball Complex on the campus of CSU Pueblo.

CSU Pueblo 7, Fort Lewis 6
Fort Lewis exploded out of the gate, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a run-batted-in (RBI) ground-out from Briana Jorgensen before Skyler Dietz later singled to drive in another. CSU Pueblo quickly knotted the game up at two apiece in its first appearance at the plate, pushing across its first run on a single from Raelynn Rogers before a throwing error allowed the tying run to score.

Alyssa Fockler kept the offense going in the bottom of the second inning, doubling down the right field line to retake a 3-2 advantage. Jorgesen then tripled the following at-bat, and Makenna Milliman singled thereafter to add a pair of insurance runs. The Pack went scoreless for back-to-back innings before breaking the game open with a five-run inning in the top of the fifth frame. All five runs were scored with two outs, thanks to a bases-clearing triple from Caitlyn Cole followed by back-to-back singles. Dietz and Milliman would lead all Skyhawks with a pair of 3-for-4 outings at the plate, while Fockler led the roster with two runs scored and Jorgen two RBIs.

Cali Niccum put the Skyhawks within one, 7-6, in the bottom of the fifth inning with a one-out sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. McKenna James (7-4) then shut the door on FLC, escaping the jam with a ground-out before allowing just one hit the rest of the way en route to her ninth complete game of the season. James surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits and one walk while striking out a game-high six batters, her third-most in a game this year. Hailie Mann (0-9) was given the loss, going 4.2 innings with seven earned runs on five hits before Amiee Shanks (0-5) came in on relief. The pair combined for five walks and three strikeouts.

CSU Pueblo 4, Fort Lewis 2
The Pack halted Fort Lewis' offense in game two on the back of freshman Mia Sanchez (5-3). In 141 pitches, Sanchez held the Skyhawks to only two earned runs on four total hits while surrendering six walks and striking out two. Addison Gavigan (1-3) went the distance for FLC and gave up four earned runs on six hits, five walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Fockler and Milliman were the only Skyhawks to record hits in the contest, each going 2-for-3.

This time, it was CSU Pueblo who jumped out to the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning after three-straight walks to open the game set the stage for a wild pitch, and a single from Cole to secure the lead. It wasn't until the bottom of the third inning that Fort Lewis scored similarly, using back-to-back walks and a Milliman single to left field to cut the deficit in half. Later, in the bottom of the fifth inning, it was Milliman once again who flipped the field and tied the contest with a single to right field.

The Pack responded in kind, retaking a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning with a lead-off solo home run from Cole. Delaney Barela would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with a one-out sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Fockler was the only player to reach base for FLC through the final two innings with a one-out single in the top of the seventh.
