CSU Pueblo takes weekend series from Fort Lewis

Skyhawks wrap up fourth road series in five weeks

PUEBLO, Colo. – An extra-inning loss to the ThunderWolves in game one of the afternoon provided all the momentum against the Skyhawks as Fort Lewis (2-22, 1-18 RMAC) was felled 3-2 and 9-1 to drop its weekend series four games to none to CSU Pueblo (15-12, 14-6 RMAC) at the Rawlings Softball Complex.

CSU Pueblo 3, Fort Lewis 2 (8 Inn.)
Senior Amiee Shanks (0-6) toed the rubber opposite freshman Mia Sanchez (7-3) for what would be a rubber match in the third game of the series. While the pair combined for ten total hits, it was just three frames and an extra inning that would decide the contest. Sanchez earned her second win of the weekend with a final line of two earned runs on three hits, five walks, and one hit-by-pitch alongside three strikeouts. Shanks surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with no walks or strikeouts.

Fort Lewis had the first scoring opportunity of the day, loading the bases in the bottom of the second inning on a lead-off walk to Skyler Dietz, a single from Natalie Rodman, and a fielder's choice forced by Faith Sgro. The Skyhawks would come up empty, however, and stranded six runners across the first four innings of play.

FLC finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring the first run of the game on a run-batted-in (RBI) ground out from Makenna Milliman before Dietz doubled the following at-bat to score Mykel Torrez, who pinch-ran for Briana Jorgensen following Jorgensen's seven-pitch walk. The Pack didn't take long to respond, knotting the game up at two apiece in the top of the sixth inning with back-to-back-to-back singles capped by Caitlyn Cole's two-RBI shot to left-center field. Fort Lewis then stranded two runners across the final two innings of play.

In the top of the eighth inning, CSU Pueblo's Ashley Tosh drew a lead-off walk, giving Raelynn Rogers a pinch-running opportunity. Rogers advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt before coming around to score the game-winning run on a double to right-center from Madelyn Huerta.

CSU Pueblo 9, Fort Lewis 1 (5 Inn.)
Freshman Brooke Walton (0-1) made her collegiate debut in the circle to start game two but was quickly chased out after just 2.1 innings of work. Walton allowed six runs, three unearned, on five hits and one hit-by-pitch. Hailie Mann (0-9) then made her second relief appearance of the season, tossing the final 2.2 innings and surrendering three runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.

CSU Pueblo's ace McKenna James (8-4) was much more dominant in her second start of the weekend, limiting the Skyhawks to a single unearned run while scattering four hits without a walk. James also struck out a game-high four batters. Fort Lewis' only run of the game came across in the bottom of the second inning when a fielding error at first base allowed Milliman to swipe the extra base.

Crooked frames were the difference maker once again as The Pack racked up three runs each in the top half of the first, third, and fifth innings. It was back-to-back errors and a stolen base that supplied the early lead, and another error, stolen base, and a triple from Cole extended the lead in the third. Later in the fifth, it was James who all but secured her victory with her first career home run, a three-run blast, down the left field line.

Notes
-Fort Lewis dropped its second-straight series to CSU Pueblo and now trails The Pack 81-30 all-time and 45-14 on the campus of CSUP.
-Brooke Walton made her collegiate debut and first appearance in the circle.
-Emalynn Redmann set a Skyhawks season-high with two stolen bases in game one. Redmann is now 4-of-4 on stolen basest his season.
-Natalie Rodman stole her first base of the 2025 campaign. Rodman led all Skyhawks with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Skyler Dietz was the only other Fort Lewis player with a multi-hit afternoon with a 2-for-5 performance.
-The Skyhawks were out-hit 16-7 and left 12 runners on base.
