Fort Lewis slugs to 2-0 series lead over Adams State

Dietz hits for the cycle across both games

ALAMOSA, Colo. – A Fort Lewis squad that has struggled with run support in recent weeks finally found a foothold on Saturday afternoon at Adams State as the Skyhawks out-slugged and out-hit the Grizzlies 27-16 to down the opposition 13-3 through five innings in game one and 8-6 in game two to take its first series lead of the season.

Fort Lewis 13, Adams State 3 (5 Inn.)
The Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning but later blew the contest open by tacking on six runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Adams State only found success in the bottom of the third inning, plating two runs via a triple off the bat of junior Sydney Rodriguez, who came around to score on a single the following at-bat.

Junior Skyler Dietz had the Skyhawks offense firing on all cylinders in the first game of the series as the six-foot outfielder pieced together a 2-for-4 afternoon with a three-run bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the fifth while also scoring twice. Senior Briana Jorgensen was next up in slugging, belting a pair of one-RBI doubles in the first and fifth innings while also drawing two walks and scoring twice.

Three additional Skyhawks picked up two hits in the contest, including junior Cali Niccum, who notched an RBI single in the fourth before blasting her second solo home run of the season later in the fifth. Senior Emalynn Redmann went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, a sacrifice fly, and scored once. Sophomore Natalie Rodman also went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and one run scored.

Amiee Shanks (1-6) picked up her first win in the circle this season, going the distance for the sixth time and handling the Grizzlies in just 61 pitches. The Tucson, Ariz., native limited ASU to three runs on seven hits while striking out a pair. Sophomore Aubree Davis (4-12) took the loss, going 4.0 innings and surrendering nine runs, eight of which were earned, on nine hits and four walks. Davis also struck out three before freshman Brooklyn Burgess (0-6) threw the final inning in relief, giving up four earned runs on four hits and a walk.

Fort Lewis 8, Adams State 6
Freshman Alyssa Fockler and junior Alejandra Medina gave the Skyhawks an early lead once more, launching a pair of ground-rule doubles in the top of the second inning. While the second game was much tighter, the early lead meant Fort Lewis would never trail in the contest. Adams State managed to get on the board in the bottom of the second and third innings, utilizing an RBI double from sophomore Caylie Eiguren, and took advantage of an FLC fielding error, but the Skyhawks had breathing room thanks to a two-run blast from Dietz in the top of the third, her first of the season.

The Grizzlies picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth inning by way of a single from junior Grace Hendricks after a one-out ground-rule double from Rodriguez. But Fort Lewis exploded once again in the top of the sixth inning, picking up three runs on a pair of doubles from Mykel Torres and Redmann capped by a single to center field from Rodman. Niccum gave the Skyhawks an insurance run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, and it nearly came in handy as Adams State quickly found life with a three-run two-out rally thanks to a single from Hendricks followed by an Emily Sauvageau double which scored the final two runs of the game.

Junior Hailie Mann (1-9) held out, throwing her fifth complete game of the season on 136 pitches en route to her first victory of 2025. The Tucson, Ariz., native allowed five earned runs on nine hits and three walks while matching her career-high with eight strikeouts. Mann's eight strikeouts are also the most by a Skyhawk this season. Freshman Celie Page (0-9) took the loss, throwing a complete game on 103 pitches and surrendering eight earned runs on 14 hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
