Milliman catches fire, Skyhawks complete sweep over Grizzlies

Walton picks up first collegiate win on relief

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team earned its first sweep, shutout, and series win of the 2025 campaign on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Softball Field as the Skyhawks (6-22, 5-18 RMAC) downed the Grizzlies (4-32, 2-22 RMAC) 9-0 through six innings in game one before holding off the opposition in the seventh inning and walking away with an 11-8 win in game two to capture the series.

Fort Lewis 9, Adams State 0
It was a new day, but the same red-hot Skyhawks lineup showed up once again. Fort Lewis racked up 15 total hits, including four doubles and a pair of home runs, led by Makenna Milliman's perfect performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a team-high three runs batted in (RBI) and one run scored thanks to an inside-the-park home run, the first homer of her career, in the top of the second inning.

Freshman Addison Gavigan (2-3) set the stage for the victory, throwing her third complete game of the year and holding Adams State to just four hits and three walks. Gavigan also doubled up her career-high with six strikeouts. On the flip side, the Grizzlies' Aubree Davis (4-13) was dealt the loss after surrendering nine earned runs on 15 hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Davis struck out just two Skyhawks.

Milliman extended the Skyhawks lead in the top of the fourth inning, pushing across Skyler Deitz, who doubled to left center to open the frame with a single to right center. Two more runs came through in the top of the fifth inning, first on an RBI double to center field from Briana Jorgensen and once more on yet another RBI single to left field from Milliman. Fort Lewis then sealed the run-rule victory at the top of the sixth inning, tacking on five insurance runs on seven hits. Cali Niccum led off the inning with a solo homer to left center, her team-leading third of the season, and later, Emalynn Redmann posted an RBI single followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Jorgensen and Dietz. Niccum, in her second at-bat of the inning, shot an RBI single to center field for the final run of the ball game.

Fort Lewis 11, Adams State 8
The Skyhawks rode the wave of momentum from the first game, jumping out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Zoey Langerak, who reached with a lead-off single for her first collegiate hit, scored the opening run on a passed ball before Milliman stepped the plate and belted a two-run homer, her second of the day and career, to left field. Niccum and Mykel Torres then exchanged back-to-back singles to plate the final two runs.

Dietz added another run in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, and it proved key to holding the Skyhawks lead as Adams State answered with a five-run frame in the bottom of the second inning to pull within one run. The Grizzlies scored twice on a triple from junior Emily Sauvageau, then plated two more on a double from junior Kaylee Eyl, and lastly with another double from junior Grace Hendrickson.

An error by Adams State in the top of the fifth inning allowed the Skyhawks to extend its lead out to three, but that didn't faze the Grizzlies, who tied the game up at eight all in the bottom of the fifth. Another double from Caylie Eiguren scored two to put ASU within one and ultimately chased out right-handed starter Chloe Padilla (1-3), who tossed 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on five hits and three walks. Padilla struck out a game-high five batters.

Brooke Walton (1-1) came in on relief, throwing the final 2.2 innings and giving up just a single hit to Adams State en route to her first collegiate victory. In addition, Walton struck out a pair while not handing over any walks. Both sides came up empty in the sixth inning, and it was who other than Milliman who supplied a two-RBI bases-loaded single back through the middle in the top of the seventh inning to score what stood as the game-winning runs. Alyssa Fockler also added a third insurance run with an RBI sacrifice fly the following at-bat.

Adams State's Celie Page (0-10) was given the loss as the freshman gave up 11 runs, ten of which were earned, on 14 hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch. The Grizzlies also committed four errors.
