Skyhawks go dutch in Saturday twin bill

Fort Lewis earns second shutout of 2025 campaign

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Redshirt junior Hailie Mann threw a complete-game shutout in game two, leading the Skyhawks to an 11-0 victory over the Cowgirls to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 loss in game one, putting the Fort Lewis softball team in contention to tie or take the series against New Mexico Highlands tomorrow afternoon.

New Mexico Highlands 2, Fort Lewis 1
Amiee Shanks (1-7) and Jazmyn Griego (4-6) threw a pair of complete games in the exciting series opener, with Griego totaling just 89 pitches to Shanks' 79. Both pitchers struck out one each, forcing a combined 20 ground outs and 12 fly outs.

Natalie Rodman got the scoring going in the top of the second inning, pushing across Alyssa Fockler with a single to center field putting the Skyhawks on top. Fockler had previously reached on an infield single before advancing to second with a single from Cali Niccum. New Mexico Highlands tied the game two innings later, using a run-batted-in (RBI) ground out from Dioni Lincoln to score Alessandra DeLaTrinidad who reached base on a Fort Lewis error to open the inning.

The Cowgirls later struck for the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Giana Marez rifled a one-out double to center field to follow up Alexia Apodoca's triple to right field. Rodman, Fockler, and Makenna Milliman tallied two hits each.

Fort Lewis 11, New Mexico Highlands 0 (5 Inn.)
Mann (2-9), a five-foot-nine graduate of Mountain View High School in Tucson, Ariz., set the tone in game two, tossing her sixth complete game of the season on 107 pitches and finishing two strikeouts shy of her career-high with six. In addition, Mann scattered six hits and two walks.

The Skyhawks put up a trio of crooked frames, scoring in every inning of the contest except the third. Skyler Dietz got the momentum rolling in the top of the first, driving in one with a single to center field. Fockler followed suit two at-bats later, singling to left field to score another. Later in the second inning, Sienna Mullin singled to drive in Rodman who led off the inning with a stand-up double.

Fort Lewis erupted in the fourth inning, scoring two runs with smart base running after a sacrifice fly from Briana Jorgensen was overthrown back to the infield. Dietz then belted a double to left center, and Milliman a single to right center to cap the four-run inning. The Skyhawks would tack on four more in the top of the fifth inning to initiate the run-rule starting with a solo homer from Niccum to left center followed by a three-run blast from Jorgensen off the fence in the same spot.

Kennedy Williams (2-7) took the loss, surrendering four runs, three earned, on seven hits and one hit-by-pitch across 3.1 innings. Karla Banegas (1-11) threw the final 1.2 innings on relief, giving up seven runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks.
