Softball splits weekend series with Cowgirls

Fort Lewis caps four-week road trip with series split

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – After suffering an 8-0 six-inning shutout in game one to the Cowgirls, the Skyhawks rallied offensively and jumped out to an early lead, keying in a 5-3 win in game two, giving Fort Lewis (8-24, 7-20 RMAC) a 2-2 series split with New Mexico Highlands (10-27, 4-24 RMAC) down at the NMHU Cowgirls softball field.

New Mexico Highlands 8, Fort Lewis 0 (6 Inn.)
The Cowgirls came out swinging to open the second day of the series, picking up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits and two Skyhawks errors. Addison Gavigan (2-4) took the circle for the Skyhawks, going 4.0 innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Gavigan also struck out a game-high three batters before Brooke Walton went in and tossed the final 1.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.

New Mexico Highland scored in all but one frame, jumping out to an early lead with three walks and a single in the top of the first inning before an Andre DeLaTrinidad run-batted-in (RBI) double and an RBI fielder's choice forced by Dioni Lincoln in the bottom of the second inning. Later in the fourth inning, Heaven Medina singled to left field with two outs to score Jazymn Griego, who sent a one-out double to left center. Alexia Apodoca then homered to lead off the fifth inning. NMHU went on to put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and walk off the game via the run rule, with the final run coming on a wild pitch.

Griego (5-6) cruised to her second win of the series, scattering nine hits from the Skyhawks. Skyler Dietz and Makenna Milliman posted the only two-hit performances, while Griego surrendered only one walk with two strikeouts.

Fort Lewis 5, New Mexico Highlands 3
Chloe Padilla (2-3) started in the circle for the Skyhawks in game two and the Colorado native put together quite the performance on both sides of the field en route to securing the series split. The five-foot-seven graduate of Fruita High School tossed her second complete game of the season, scattering five hits, one walk, and three hit-batters for just one earned run. In addition, Padilla struck out a career-high 10 Cowgirls, marking the most by a Skyhawk and the ninth-most by an RMAC pitcher this season. Padilla also supplied her own run support, belting a three-run homer, the first of her career, to center field in the top of the fourth inning to account for four of the Skyhawks' five runs with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Skyhawks grabbed the early lead in the top of the second inning when Natalie Rodman sent a sacrifice fly to right field and pushed it out to 2-0 thanks to a wild pitch that allowed Alyssa Fockler to swipe home. Padilla then doubled-up the lead with a fourth-inning homer. Griego got New Mexico Highlands on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field, but Mykel Torres would extend the lead once more with an RBI double down the left-field line in the top half of the sixth.

The Cowgirls would threaten to tie in the final frame, first scoring two runs on an infield error before later pushing the tying run to second base, but Padilla escaped the jam with a ground out to second base. Vicky Alvarado (0-1) took her first loss of the year, allowing four earned runs on four hits, three walks, and a wild pitch through 3.0 innings. Kennedy Williams threw the final 4.0 innings, giving up an earned run on five hits and one walk with the Cowgirls' only two strikeouts.

Notes
-New Mexico Highlands still leads Fort Lewis 90-72 all-time and 52-30 in Las Vegas, N.M.
-The Skyhawks have now won and tied back-to-back series, respectively. In addition, FLC snapped a one-series losing streak to the Cowgirls at NMHU.
-Chloe Padilla hit her first collegiate home run, accounting for three runs of her support in the circle.
-Makenna Milliman led all Skyhawks at the plate, going 4-for-6 with one run scored and one walk. Milliman also had a double as one of three extra-base hits on the afternoon.
