Mavericks spoil Skyhawks return to Aspen Field

Sgro leads Fort Lewis with three hit afternoon

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball came up empty-handed in its first home games since the first of March, falling 3-2 in game one and 9-1 in five innings in game two to Colorado Mesa (27-9, 25-5 RMAC), putting the Skyhawks at 8-26 overall and 7-22 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Colorado Mesa 3, Fort Lewis 2
Fort Lewis has stayed consistent with its series openers, forcing rubber matches between the two squad's aces in the circle. Hailie Mann (2-10) took to the rubber for the Skyhawks, and the redshirt junior allowed three earned runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out six. Jessalyn Gallegos (13-1) stood in for the Mavericks and held down the home squad for two earned runs on seven hits and one walk with a game-high nine strikeouts, her third-most this season.

The Skyhawks had few scoring opportunities but managed to strike first in the bottom half of the fourth inning, using four consecutive singles capped by a shot from Makenna Milliman back up the middle to go up 2-0. Colorado Mesa looked to strike back, loading the bases in the top half of the fifth inning, but Mann was able to force a fly out and a foul out before striking out the final batter to escape the jam.

Just an inning later, the Mavericks would take the lead on a go-ahead three-run homer from Myah Arrieta that inched over the fence down the right-field line. After going three-up and three-down in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Skyhawks opened the final frame with a leadoff double to left field from Alyssa Fockler, who later moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, back-to-back strikeouts would give CMU its first win of the series.

Colorado Mesa 9, Fort Lewis 1
The early win supplied Colorado Mesa with all of the momentum, and the Mavericks rode it out for a commanding nine runs on ten hits and the early 2-0 series lead. Amiee Shanks (1-8) started in the circle but was quickly chased out, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits and one walk in her 2.2 innings of work. Addison Gavigan (2-4) came in relief, tossing the final 2.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on one hit, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Gavigan also struck out a pair.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-clearing double from Chloe Valdez and later tacked on another run in the top of the second inning on a triple from Arrieta. In the top of the third inning, Colorado Mesa broke the game open first with a solo homer from Valdez before back-to-back singles from Olivia Litzen and Ava Stephens put CMU ahead 7-0.

Fort Lewis finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, using an RBI ground-out from Fockler to plate Skyler Dietz, who reached on a fielder's choice before a wild pitch and a single from Milliman moved her to third base. Colorado Mesa wouldn't be denied its run-rule victory, however, as Arrieta brought her RBI count on the day to six with a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning. Preslee Christensen (6-3) cruised to the win, allowing the single earned run on just four hits with a game-high eight strikeouts.
