Skyhawks drop series to Mountain Lions

Fockler, Dietz notch three hits apiece

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A 23-to-13 difference in hits Sunday afternoon was the difference maker as the Fort Lewis softball team (2-18, 1-14 RMAC) fell 6-1 and 9-5 to UCCS (15-9, 10-5 RMAC), surrendering the four-game conference series on the road to the Mountain Lions.

UCCS 6, Fort Lewis 1
All it took was a six-run opening frame for the Mountain Lions to cruise steadily to a series-securing 6-1 victory. Junior Autumn Kunze (3-4), making her first appearance of the weekend, held down the Skyhawks, scattering five hits for one earned run in her third complete game. Kunze struck out six batters while both walking and hitting three batters.

UCCS quickly jumped on Chloe Padilla (1-3), piecing together five consecutive singles for two runs before sophomore Laynee Case belted a grand slam to right field, earning the 6-0 advantage with no outs. Amiee Shanks (0-5) then took to the rubber and threw the final six innings of play, allowing just five hits and one walk.

Fort Lewis' lone score of the game came by way of a walk drawn by Padilla in the top of the third inning after Alyssa Fockler and Makenna Milliman recorded singles and Briana Jorgensen a base on balls. With two outs, however, the Skyhawks were unable to close the gap any further, stranding three of its nine total base runners for the game.

UCCS 9, Fort Lewis 5
The Skyhawks found its first lead of the weekend in the top of the first inning of game two on a McKenna Timmons single back up the middle with the bases loaded. The advantage was short-lived as UCCS jumped back in front, 4-1, thanks to a crooked second inning that saw the Mountain Lions record three hits and force three Skyhawk errors.

Fort Lewis responded, coming back within a run in the top of the third inning after Sienna Mullin doubled to left-center field with the bases loaded to score one following a run-batted-in hit-by-pitch to Natalie Rodman. UCCS used back-to-back solo home runs to re-extend the lead in the bottom of the third, but the Skyhawks once again responded in the top of the fourth inning to pull back within one thanks to a two-run home run from Jorgensen.

UCCS would hold the Skyhawks scoreless in the final three innings of the contest, however, while tacking on one insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Lauren Falk (2-2) earned the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings as the second Mountain Lion out of the bullpen. Falk surrendered just two walks, two hits, and a hit-by-pitch. Hailie Mann (0-8) took the loss, going 2.0 innings and allowing six runs, only three earned, on five hits and five walks.
