Skyhawks blanked on Saturday afternoon

Fockler, Sgro supply only multi-hit afternoons

CHADRON, Neb. – Fort Lewis softball fell behind two games to none in its four-game series with Chadron State on Saturday, recording just five hits across both games and committing costly errors that led to a pair of 8-0 (5 Inn.) and 2-0 losses to the Eagles (16-24, 12-22 RMAC), dropping the Skyhawks to 8-30 overall and 7-26 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Chadron State 8, Fort Lewis 0 (5 Inn.)
Fort Lewis couldn't find its footing in the series opener thanks to a dominant two-hit outing from senior right-handed pitcher Tori Haug (7-12). The Commerce City, Colo., native went the distance for the eighth time this season on only 74 pitches, scattering two hits and one walk while striking out five.

Hailie Mann (2-12) toed the rubber to start but was chased out after 2.2 innings of work and surrendered six earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Brooke Walton (1-1) tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a wild pitch. Faith Sgro and Alyssa Fockler notched the only hits for Fort Lewis.

While seven different Eagles picked up hits, it was the trio of J'lyssa Martinez, Brogan Allen, and Sophia Brennan that picked up two hits apiece. Brennan was explosive for Chadron State, belting a pair of solo and two-run homers in the second and third innings, respectively. Martinez also clubbed a solo homer in the third inning, and Lauren Zimmerman and Allen supplied the final two scoring hits with a two-RBI double in the first inning and a walk-off two-RBI single, respectively.

Chadron State 2, Fort Lewis 0
It was the Eagles' pitching staff that proved the difference once more in game two, this time thanks to a complete game outing from senior right-handed pitcher Kenzi Garner (5-8). Garner was three hits shy of perfection, recording six strikeouts without a walk or a wild pitch. More impressively, Garner went the distance through all seven innings on 65 pitches.

Alejandra Medina, Sgro, and Fockler picked up the only hits for the Skyhawks. Chloe Padilla (2-5) stood in the circle for Fort Lewis, allowing two unearned runs on six hits while matching her career-high with 10 strikeouts.
Both runs came across unearned for Chadron State and both in the bottom of the third inning. The first run came across on a Skyhawks throwing error at third base, and the second on a sacrifice fly from Zimmerman four at-bats later.
