Softball salvages a win in series finale

Fort Lewis belts three homers in game two

CHADRON, Neb. – It took three games and 15 total innings, but after Fort Lewis fell 8-1 to Chadron State in game three, the Skyhawks (9-31, 8-27 RMAC) managed to respond with a flurry of extra-base hits, including a pair of first-career home runs for McKenna Timmons and Emalynn Redmann, to down the Eagles (16-24, 12-22 RMAC) 10-2 in five innings in the series finale at the CSC Softball Field.

Chadron State 8, Fort Lewis 1
Fort Lewis remained cold offensively but managed to put up five total hits, equaling the squad's total through both games yesterday. In addition, the Skyhawks snapped 15 unanswered runs for the Eagles, pushing across the first run of the series on an RBI double to left field off the bat of Skyler Dietz, who was the only Skyhawk to record two hits in the contest.

Chadron State's Tori Haug (8-12) was lights-out once again, earning her second complete-game victory of the series on 95 pitches. The five-foot-six right-handed pitcher struck out a game-high three batters while scattering five hits, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch for a lone earned run. Addison Gavigan (2-5) was credited with the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits, five walks, one hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch through 2.0 innings. Brooke Walton (1-1) and Hailie Mann (2-12) each threw 2.0 innings of relief, combining for another three runs, five hits, and five walks.

The Eagles jumped out to a five-run lead in the bottom of the second inning, utilizing four straight walks to open the inning and a wild pitch to plate one before adding another on a sacrifice fly, and the final three on back-to-back doubles from Lauren Zimmerman and Ashland Baca. A J'lyssa Martinez double would supply two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and a pinch-hit solo homer from Kenzi Garner would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Fort Lewis 10, Chadron State 2 (5 Inn.)
After 19 total innings of play, including 15 scoreless, Fort Lewis finally found its footing in the batter's box, outhitting Chadron State 9-to-4 and scoring in all five innings to salvage a run-rule victory in the final game of the series. Chloe Padilla (3-5) tossed her fifth complete game of the season en route to her team-leading third win in the circle. Padilla allowed one earned run on four hits and six walks while striking out a game-high seven batters.

Briana Jorgensen put the Skyhawks ahead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single through the left side and later helped extend the lead out to 3-0 in the top of the second inning after forcing a pair of RBI fielder's choices alongside Faith Sgro. Later in the third inning, Mykel Torres forced a throwing error by the shortstop allowing McKenna Timmons to swipe another run. Fort Lewis went on to cap its scoring efforts with a trio of home runs, including solo shots from Jorgensen and Timmons and wrapped up with a three-run blast from Emalynn Redmann.

Zimmerman gave Chadron State its first run of the contest with an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the first inning, and Elizabeth Thorngren added the final run in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI walk.
