Softball falls twice in midweek doubleheader

Dietz, Medina stand as the only Skyhawks to notch two hits

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball opened up its final homestand with a pair of 8-0 and 8-4 losses to Black Hills State as the Yellow Jackets (25-21, 23-15 RMAC) crushed it at the plate, outhitting the Skyhawks (9-33, 8-29 RMAC) 27 to 9 on Thursday afternoon, up on the rim.

Black Hills State 8, Fort Lewis 0
The Yellow Jackets cruised to the series opener on the back of a dominant and near-perfect outing from sophomore Laci Peskey (21-6). The five-foot-six right-hander tossed her 21st complete game of the season, tied for the third-most in NCAA Division II, on 96 pitches, striking out eight Skyhawks and surrendering just two hits in the process.

Fort Lewis' two lone singles came off the bats of Skyler Dietz and Faith Sgro in the bottom of the second and third innings, respectively. FLC managed three additional base runners thanks to a fielder's choice and a pair of Yellow Jackets' errors.

Black Hills State jumped out to an early edge in the top of the first inning, scoring first on a run-batted-in (RBI) single from Carly Reyes Mims, and again on a two-RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Ashlynn Pauwels. Later in the second inning, BHSU added another run on a Tyler Whitlock bunt-single before tacking on another run in the fifth with a solo home run from Pauwels and three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a bases-clearing double to left-center field from Katelyn Jarzobski. Chloe Padilla (3-6) was given the loss with a final line of 13 hits, eight earned runs, three walks, three strikeouts, and one hit batter.

Black Hills State 8, Fort Lewis 4
The visitors from Spearfish, S.D., rode the momentum into game two, striking for one run in the first inning on a single from Pauwels through the middle. Fort Lewis would respond this time, evening the score in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice forced by Alyssa Fockler. The lead was short-lived, however, as BHSU jumped right back in front at the top of the second inning, pushing across three runs on an Audrey Fouras homer, a Desi Hernandez single, and another double from Pauwels.

The Skyhawks would come roaring back in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit in half on an RBI single to center field from Sienna Mullin. Mullin's single created a spark for Fort Lewis, and the Skyhawks took full advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring twice to tie the game up at 4-4 on the back of an infield single from Dietz that forced a throwing error allowing Mykel Torres to score, and a first-pitch single through the left side from Alejandra Medina the following at-bat. Black Hills State would make the final offensive push, however, taking a one-run lead on a sacrifice fly from Jarzobski before Taylor Dowden belted a three-run homer to left-center field.

Paige Goodell (1-6) started in the circle for Black Hills State, going 4.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks before Malaya Coleman (0-4) went in on relief. Coleman's appearance was short-lived, securing just two outs while giving up two runs and four hits. It was Peskey once more who stood in for the Yellow Jackets, and the Waller, Texas, native was lights-out once more, giving up one walk and one hit in 2.1 innings while striking out four. Peskey earned her second win of the afternoon to now stand tied for the fifth-most wins in DII. Hailie Mann (2-13) took the loss with a final line of eight runs on 14 hits, one walk, one wild pitch, two hit batters, and two strikeouts.

Notes
-Black Hills State snapped a 17-game losing streak to the Skyhawks but still trails Fort Lewis 37-9 all-time and 21-5 on Aspen Field. In addition, BHSU ended a streak of five consecutive series wins for FLC and put the Yellow Jackets in contention to win their first-ever series over the Skyhawks.
-Alejandra Medina and Skyler Dietz were the only Skyhawks to have multi-hit afternoons. Medina and Briana Jorgensen notched the only extra-base hits with a pair of doubles.
