Slugging keys in snowy senior win

Fort Lewis seniors win final game on Aspen Field with record-breaking offense

DURANGO, Colo. – Fueled by the passions of senior day, Fort Lewis rallied from a 10-1 loss to Black Hills State (26-22, 24-16 RMAC) in game one as the Skyhawks (10-34, 9-30 RMAC) belted 21 hits, tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history, to send out its seniors with a dominant 15-7 victory in their final game on a snow-flurried Aspen Field.

Black Hills State 10, Fort Lewis 1 (5 Inn.)
The Yellow Jackets would not be stymied from their first-ever series win over the Skyhawks, and Laci Peskey (22-6) toed the rubber to ensure just that. The sophomore was lights-out for the third time in the series, tossing her 22nd complete game and surrendering one earned run on eight hits and one walk while striking out a game-high six. On the flip side, Addison Gavigan (2-6) was dealt the loss, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits and nine walks while striking out five.

Black Hills State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning using a Carly Reyes Mims double and a Desi Hernandez sacrifice fly. Then, in the top of the third inning, an Alyssa Wong single was followed by a two-RBI Audrey Fouras double to stretch the lead out to 5-1. Reyes Mims belted a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning, before a three-RBI double from Katelyn Jarzobski in the top of the fifth inning instituted the run-rule in favor of the visitors from Spearfish, S.D.

Fort Lewis avoided the shutout in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Fockler after Skyler Dietz sent a lead-off triple to the right field corner.

Fort Lewis 15, Black Hills State 7 (6 Inn.)
The final game of the series came down to a slug-fest, and the Skyhawks walked away with the victory on the back of two homers and six doubles, tied for the fifth-most in a single game in program history, for 15 runs batted in, also good for the seventh-most in program history. While Black Hills State managed to erase a 7-1 deficit and tie the game in the third inning, they had no answer for back-to-back homers from Alejandra Medina and Makenna Milliman, which set off a run of eight unanswered runs for FLC that rang in a run-rule walk-off win in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Amiee Shanks started in the circle for the Skyhawks, throwing the first and one final pitch on Aspen Field on senior day before exiting. Hailie Mann (2-11) then stepped in, going 2.2 innings and allowing seven runs on ten hits with two strikeouts. Chloe Padilla (4-6) then stepped up and held hot-hitting BHSU to just two hits and one walk through the final 3.1 innings while striking out five. Malaya Coleman (0-5), one of four Yellow Jackets to toe the rubber, took the loss, tossing 2.0 innings and surrendering three runs on five hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Faith Sgro, Briana Jorgensen, Medina, Milliman, and Fockler each enjoyed three-hit afternoons while Stacia Raley and Dietz supplied another two hits each as well. In addition, Dietz also led the Skyhawks with four runs scored, as well as Fockler and Milliman with four RBIs each.
