Mavericks take series from Skyhawks

Jorgensen belts team-leading fourth homer

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball dropped its first series in three weekends on Monday afternoon, falling 8-2 and 14-2 on Aspen Field to wrap up the Skyhawks (8-28, 7-24 RMAC) four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series against the league-leading Mavericks (29-9, 27-5 RMAC) of Colorado Mesa.

Colorado Mesa 8, Fort Lewis 2
Game three of the series came up all Colorado Mesa thanks to a dominant outing from redshirt freshman Jessalyn Gallegos (14-1). A product of Canyon High School in Anaheim, Calif., Gallegos cruised for 6.0 innings, scattered four hits and one walk for two runs, one earned, while also striking out six. Sophia Tassinari (5-3) threw the final inning with one hit allowed.

The Mavericks struck early and often, jumping out a 2-0 lead on a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the second inning before tacking on two more on a Kamdyn Hagerty home run in the top of the third inning, and once more thanks to a passed ball in the top of the fourth inning. Colorado Mesa drove in its final three runs of the game in the top of the final frame on a three-run homer to center field off the bat of Jackie Oster.

It wasn't until the final inning that Fort Lewis would get on the board, using an RBI single to center field from Cali Niccum to score Makenna Milliman, who led off the inning with a double to left center field on an 0-2 count. The Skyhawks would add another run on the final play of the game with an RBI single from Alejandra Medina. Chloe Padilla (2-4) went the distance for the third time this season, taking the loss with a final line of 12 hits, eight runs, five earned, three walks, two hit-by-pitches, and a pair of strikeouts.

Colorado Mesa 7, Fort Lewis 2
Hailie Mann (2-11) took the rubber for the second time in the series and once again held the Mavericks down through the first five innings of play. While Mann capped her outing with seven hits and seven runs, only five came across as earned, with four coming off the bat of Ally Distler's five-inning grand slam. Brooke Walton (1-1) threw the final inning and gave up seven runs on six hits and four walks. Walton struck out two.

Colorado Mesa struck first in the top of the third, using a two-out RBI ground-out from Distler after a Skyhawks error kept the inning alive. Briana Jorgensen would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the year before taking a 2-1 lead on an Alyssa Fockler single down the left field line that nearly left the yard.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Distler's grand slam quickly put the Mavericks back on top in the top half of the sixth inning, and another Skyhawks error and a double from Makayla Westmoreland extended the CMU lead out to 7-2. Distler would later rack up her sixth, seventh, and eighth RBIs of the contest and put the run rule into effect with a three-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth inning. The Mavs would add on another four runs before the frame came to an end.

Preslee Christensen (6-3) started in the circle but left after 3.1 innings of work and giving up two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Marisa Nehm (2-1) came in on relief and went the final 2.2 innings allowing just two hits the rest of the way.
