Skyhawks look to overcome first-round setback

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Fort Lewis men's golf team shot a 583 combined score through the first 36 holes of the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association Palm Valley Classic to reside at seven strokes above par and 14 strokes back from a top-half finish at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
 
The Skyhawks battled sweltering heat that rose to 87 degrees with slight gusts to the southwest. Tomorrow's forecast calls for 60 degrees at the 7:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time shotgun start, with winds reaching four to five miles per hour.
 
No. 15-ranked Cal State East Bay started the tournament with an effective four-under-par 284 but then went out and shot a tournament-best 273 (-15) in its second trip through the 7,015-yard course to take control of first place by three strokes over No. 26 Midwestern State (560, -16) and No. 39 Chico State (561, -15).
 
Fort Lewis found itself in 16th place after the first 18 holes, and two strokes back from Saint Martin's, who the Skyhawks later jumped in the second round, turning a two-stroke deficit into a two-stroke lead over the Saints. FLC is now one stroke behind Texas A&M International (582, +6) and seven strokes behind UT Permian Basin and Cal State San Marcos who both stand at an even par of 576.
 
As for individuals, Colorado Mesa's Cole Beyer and Midwestern State's Seth Bearden find themselves knotted up with a pair of nine-under-par 135s. In addition, Bearden shot a tournament-best 64 (-8) in his opening round.
 
Jordan Jennings and Traejan Andrews paced the Skyhawks through the opening round, with the duo residing in a seven-way split for 53rd on the back of one-over-par 145s. Jake Chesler, who shot the lowest single round of any Skyhawk with a 70 (-2) in his second trip through the course, resides one stroke behind the duo in 60th on a 146. Tyler Tyson and Ronald Kildall III round out the team in ties for 69th and 87th with scores of 147 (+3) and 152 (+8), respectively.

Fort Lewis will play its final round of the regular season tomorrow, Tuesday, Apr. 8, with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PST.
