Men’s golf to begin 2026-27 campaign with Travis Roy Memorial Invitational

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's golf team will kick off the 2026-27 season this Sunday through Tuesday in Sheridan, Wyoming, at the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational at The Powder Horn Golf Club.

An Abrupt Finish
Fort Lewis is coming off a 2025-26 season that featured two top-five team finishes and a solo representative at the NCAA Men's Golf West South Central Regional. The Skyhawks captured fifth at last year's Travis Roy Memorial Invitational, carding an 18-over-par 594 as a team. Later the following spring, the Skyhawks wrapped up the 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship with a fifth-place finish on a team score of 716 (-4) through 45 holes before unplayable conditions brought the tournament to an abrupt finish.
 
Traejan Andrews was Fort Lewis' lone representative at the NCAA regional, and the 2025-26 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First Teamer finished T-10 individually with a three-round score of 215 (-1). Senior Jordan Jennings, the Skyhawks' newest volunteer assistant coach, was named to the RMAC All-Academic First Team and the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Teams.
 
New Lineup
Head coach Randy Stueve brought in a quintet of new Skyhawks, including four talented freshmen and a junior Division I transfer. Talan Gover highlights the group, having spent his last two seasons with the Bears at the University of Northern Colorado, where he saw action in six events and carried a 77.83 per-round scoring average.
 
The Skyhawks also see the additions of Mateo Berastegui (Phoenix, Ariz.), Anderson Helmer (El Dorado, Kan.), Preston Ross (Page, Ariz.), and Four Corners native Johnathon Smith (Pagosa Springs, Colo.).
 
Starting Lineup
Fort Lewis traveled six individuals to Wyoming for the season opener, led by senior Benjamin Harding, who held a 76.27 scoring average last year and captured T-11 at the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya (Sept. 28-30) with a 226 (+10). Chase Rogers looks to continue his upward trajectory from last year, as he captured 14th individually at his first RMAC Championships with an even par of 180. Dallin Stephens, carrying a career-best 56th-place finish on a 166(+22) at the Travis Roy Memorial last fall, will make his fourth appearance as a Skyhawk. Gover, Berastegui, and Helmer will all make their Fort Lewis debuts.
 
Forecast
Sunday will be the warmest of the three days in Sheridan, with a high of 84 degrees, slight clouds, and a chance of early morning showers. Monday and Tuesday will cool off to highs of 74 and 75 degrees, respectively, but show potential for an afternoon breeze.  
 
Regional Competition
This week's tournament features programs such as South Dakota Mines, Texas A&M International University, Westmont College, Westminster University, Montana State University Billings, and Augustana University.
 
The Skyhawks will also battle Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll No. 16-ranked West Texas A&M University, No. 18 Colorado Christian University, No. 19 Colorado State University Pueblo, and No. 22 Colorado Mesa University. Colorado School of Mines received votes as well.
 
The Powder Horn Golf Club
The Powder Horn Golf Club offers a 27-hole championship course, including the Mountain Nine, the Stag Nine, and the Eagle Nine. The Eagle Nine is the longest test of the three, stretching out to 3,683 yards from the black tees, followed by 3,491 yards on the Stag Nine, and 3,443 yards through the Mountain Nine. Student-athletes will complete just 18 holes across each of the three days, playing a mix of all three nine-hole runs.
 
Looking Ahead
Next weekend, Fort Lewis will head north up the Western Slope to co-host its San Juan Intercollegiate for a second year alongside Colorado Mesa. The tournament will take place at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, Colo., on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22.
