No. 9 Skyhawks battle back to earn hard-fought draw with Hilltoppers

Fila scores two second-half goals

AUSTIN, Texas – A sluggish first half once again erupted into an offensive shootout in the second half down in Austin, Texas, on Thursday night as No. 9-ranked Fort Lewis (1-0-1), despite playing a man down for the final 15 minutes, found answer after answer to force a 3-3 draw against St. Edward's (1-0-2) on Lewis-Chen Family Field.

Both squads finished with a balanced 20 shots overall, with the Hilltoppers firing an even 10 shots in each half, while Fort Lewis exploded for 13 shots across the final 45 minutes. The Skyhawks led overall with nine shots on goal to St. Edward's eight.

Filip Adamski put the Hilltoppers ahead just 51 seconds into the second half, belting a loose ball from a corner kick across the box and just inside the far post. Fort Lewis capitalized on a similar opportunity shortly thereafter in the 54th minute. Francisco Pinto fired a shot that was saved by SEU's Angel Ramirez, but Yohann Fila was right there to dispossess the keeper and punch in the equalizer.

Shunji Watanabe put St. Edward's in front once again in the 62nd minute, using service from the far side off the foot of Ebuka Bright-Osigwe to place a glancing header back across the box and just under the crossbar. Then it was déjà vu for Fila in the 77th minute, taking advantage of another loose ball to punch in yet another equalizer for the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis earned its first lead of the match just two minutes later in the 79th minute when Alessio Andreottola drove down the near sideline, evaded four different Hilltoppers, and found enough space to fire a diving shot from 30 yards out that snuck under the crossbar and above the outstretched arms of Ramirez.

Despite its comeback, Fort Lewis could not overcome its 11-to-10-man deficit through the final minutes, and Adamski found just enough space on a floating ball near the end line to head in the final equalizer in the 86th minute.
