DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (3-0-2) is headed out to the Front Range this weekend to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a pair of friendly matches at UCCS (1-2-3) and No. 8-ranked CSU Pueblo (3-0-3).

Defensive Player of the Week
Freshman center back Mathias Valverde was recently tabbed as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 23) for his efforts in helping Fort Lewis capture a 2-1 victory over Simon Fraser University (0-4-2) before earning a historic 8-1 win over Northwest Nazarene University (3-1-1) to hand the Nighthawks their first loss of the season. The Skyhawks limited both foes to a combined 20 total shots, including eight shots on goal. Valverde scored the first goal of his collegiate career in just his second start last Saturday, finding the back of the net with a header on the back post from a free kick near the end line.

National Numbers
Few student-athletes in the country have kicked off a season, let alone a collegiate career, quite like true freshman Alessio Andreottola. A native of Colmar, France, Andreottola has torched opponents thus far, scoring four goals while adding five assists for 13 total points, all on just 21 total shots and 11 shots on goal. Through five matches, Andreottola sits tied for the 26th-most goals, tenth-most shots on goal per game (2.2), seventh-most points, fifth-most shots per game (4.2), fourth-most assists, and stands alone for the most assists in a single match (4) this season across all of NCAA Division II.

Series with UCCS
The Mountain Lions will look to upend the Skyhawks with a chip on its shoulder Thursday night, having lost four straight matches to FLC, including a pair of season-ending matches in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament in 2023 and 2024. Fort Lewis holds a 46-15-5 edge all-time, including a 20-7-4 mark over in Colorado Springs, Colo. In addition, the Skyhawks have outscored the Mountain Lions 7-3 over the last two matches at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Mountain Lions Look for Momentum
UCCS has gotten off to a rocky start in 2025 since being picked to win the RMAC on the league's preseason coaches poll. The Mountain Lions opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Sul Ross State (2-2-2) at home, but have since gone 0-1-3 in their trip to Texas and Hawaii, with back-to-back 1-1 draws against the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (1-2-1) and Hawai'i Pacific University (3-0-2). As a team, UCCS is averaging 1.17 goals per game on 12.0 shots per game, while its opponents are averaging 1.33 goals per game on 12.8 shots per game.

Series with No. 8 CSU Pueblo
Sunday afternoon will feature two of the RMAC's best in recent years, as well as a rematch of the 2024 NCAA national quarterfinal, 2024 RMAC Tournament Championship, and 2023 RMAC Tournament Championship, all of which have gone to the ThunderWolves. While CSU Pueblo leads the series 3-2-1 over the past two years, Fort Lewis leads the all-time series 51-14-5, including 22-9-2 in Pueblo, Colo.

Stingy Defense
Simply put, there is no better defense in NCAA soccer than the No. 8-ranked ThunderWolves. CSU Pueblo stands alone in Division II, and as one of three programs across all three levels of the NCAA (DI, DII, DIII) that have yet to concede a goal to its opponent thus far. While a trio of opponents have managed to shut out CSUP, the ThunderWolves have also outscored opponents 10-0 in their three wins, two of which have come at home at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

  • Esteban Gonzalez (Jr., GK) (0 goals against, 0.00 GAA, 16 saves, 100% save percentage, 39 shots faced, 4 shutouts)
