Volleyball travels to Chadron State and Regis for RMAC week two

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team will hit the road this week for a trip to face Chadron State College and Regis University this week while continuing Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks split week one of conference play, opening the homestand with a win over Black Hills State to improve to 7-1 for the first time since 2006. Fort Lewis closed the weekend with a narrow, five-set loss to South Dakota Mines.

The win over the Yellow Jackets featured stout defense by the Skyhawks with a season-best 74 digs in a three setter. Although Black Hills State tallied 10 blocks to Fort Lewis' three, the Skyhawks controlled the service line with seven aces to their credit.

Senior Ella Butler and freshman Cambria Freymuth led the offense with eight kills apiece, while senior Ryli Kalahiki added seven kills on 16 error-free swings (.438). Sophomore Addie Garn handed out 16 assists and freshman Arianna Reyna chipped in 15. At libero, freshman Alyx Daugherty finished with a team-high 17 digs in two sets at libero, with Freymuth adding 11.

In the loss to the Hardrockers, South Dakota Mines outhit Fort Lewis .196 to .168, fueled by hitting over .300 in the final two sets. The Skyhawks finished with a 90–84 edge in digs. Junior Alina Nunez led the attack with 20 kills and 12 digs, while Freymuth added 11 kills. Sophomore libero Emery Pomroy collected 27 digs and five assists, and freshman setter Arianna Reyna posted a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs.

Scouting Chadron State College
The Eagles are 3-7 on the year and 0-2 in conference play after losses to Colorado Christian (3-2) and CSU Pueblo (3-0) last week. Chadron State has wins over Minnesota Crookston, Upper Iowa, and UMary this season. The team was 6-20 last season with a 2-12 mark in conference play.

Chadron State is hitting .175 this season compared to a .240 mark for its opponents. The Eagles average 11.4 kills, 10.3 assists, 14.9 digs, and 1.4 blocks per set.

Individually, the team is led by Mataya Ward who averages 3.32 kills per set at a .246 clip. Ward did not compete in last week's matches against CCU and CSUP. Kally Kirkwood and Gibson Beckler follow with over two kills per set. Jillian Donovan coordinates the offense and averages 9.09 assists per set. Avery Lacy is the top defense with 3.74 digs per set and has been targeted 160 times on serve receive with a .919 efficiency.

Fort Lewis won last season's meeting in three-sets with two of the sets going to extra points. DeJesus and Nunez combined for 26 kills in the win. The Skyhawks lead the all-time series but trail on the road with a 5-9 record inside the Chicoine Center.

Scouting Regis University
The Rangers have struggled early in the season and enter week two of conference play with a winless record at 0-10, 0-2 RMAC. Despite the record, Regis has faces stiff competition with three matches being played against nationally ranked opponents. Regis is coming off a 14-14 season where it went 9-5 in conference play and advanced to the second round of the RMAC Tournament.

Regis is hitting .112 this season with a .244 efficiency from its opponents. The team averages nine kills, 7.9 assists, 12.3 digs, and 1.3 blocks per set.

Isabella Smith leads the team by averaging 2.36 kills per set, followed by four players with at least one per set. Bailey Nichols guides the offense and averages 6.91 assists per set to go along with a team-leading 14 aces. Defense starts with Krissy Brei who owns 3.11 digs per set and a receiving percentage of .972 in 177 chances.

The Skyhawks trail the all-time series but earned a big win over the Rangers last season in four sets. Fort Lewis is 2-14 when playing the Rangers in Denver.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis has improved across most major statistical categories this season, led by digs per set where the team is up over four digs to average 18.1 per set this year. Additionally, the Skyhawks are hitting .205 (.152 in 2024) while averaging 1.7 aces (1.3 in 2024).

Senior middle blocker Ella Butler is off to a fantastic start by averaging 2.55 kills per set on a .363 efficiency—a mark that ranks 2nd in the RMAC. Junior Jordan DeJesus is playing equally as well while ranking 15th in the league at 2.74 kills per set at a .256 efficiency (.154 in 2024). Freshman Cambria Freymuth has added valuable offensive and defensive abilities as a six rotation outside hitter, averaging 2.66 kills and 2.74 digs per set.

For the first time in three seasons, the Skyhawks are running a 6-2 offense with freshman Arianna Reyna and sophomore Addie Garn distributing the ball. Reyna averages 5.81 assists per set while Garn averages 3.76 per set and leads the team in total aces (13). Sophomore Emery Pomroy is pacing the RMAC with 5.12 digs per set—a mark that ranks 27th in NCAA DII.

Around the RMAC
Fort Lewis ranks fourth in the conference with its 7-2 record. The Skyhawks rank first in opponent blocks (1.46), first in digs (18.65, 9th-DII), second in opponent hitting percentage (.153), seventh in hitting percentage (.205), and sixth in service aces (1.70).

Individually, Butler ranks second in hitting percentage (.411), DeJesus is 15th in kills per set (2.74), Reyna is eighth in assists per set (5.81), Chloe Ruhl is ninth in aces per set (.43), and Pomroy is first in digs per set (5.12).

Fort Lewis remains on the road for a pair of Regional Pod games in Alamosa and Las Vegas, N.M. The matches do not count toward conference records. First, the Skyhawks face Adams State on Friday, October 3, followed by a Saturday match against New Mexico Highlands.
