Skyhawks storm back, post 3-1 win over Hardrockers on Dirks Field

Fort Lewis moves to a perfect 9-0 all-time against South Dakota Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis men's soccer team conceded early but quickly took control, storming back to defeat South Dakota Mines 3-1 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match to complete a triumphant return to a wet, brisk Dirks Field Fright night.

The Skyhawks rifled off 17 shots, its fifth-most this year, and targeted eight shots on-frame, and took only two corner kicks. Meanwhile, Fort Lewis' defense stood tall against 16 shots, four shots on goal, and an astounding 13 corner kicks from the Hardrockers.

The lone blemish on the scoresheet came in the 13th minute, when a shot with pace from Nickolas North outside the penalty box clipped a defender and deflected just inside the top corner of the far post. It was North's ninth goal of the campaign.

Fort Lewis drew level moments later in the 31st minute. Anis Harrar found the opportunity, took a throw-in inside his own defensive third, carried possession through three defenders to the half-line, and sent service through the backline. Fabrizio Aguilera, with a step on his defender, raced nearly 40 yards downfield and chipped the goalkeeper one-on-one to equalize.

Freshman Noam Maggartou orchestrated a pair of quick strikes for the Skyhawks shortly out of the half, first in the 55th minute by controlling a loose ball on a corner kick just inside the area to find Francisco Pinto, who, on his first touch, serviced the ball back into the area where Iver Høihjelle was waiting to glance his third goal of the season back across goal. It was Maggartou's fourth assist and Pinto's seventh.

Lightning strikes twice, and so did Pinto in the 56th minute, quickly doubling Fort Lewis' lead after Maggartou, in striker fashion, carried possession into the penalty box to pull out a trio of Hardrockers defenders before centering service to Pinto for the punch-in goal, Pinto's fifth of the season. Maggartou has posted two assists in back-to-back matches.
